Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks could not force a split in their six-game season series against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, dropping the finale Friday 4-1 at ImOn Communications Arena.
Cedar Rapids won all three matchups at their home rink, as well as edging the Hawks at Young Arena in overtime on Thanksgiving.
Friday, a Cedar Rapids power play goal in the first period put the RoughRiders ahead permanently. At 9:29, Brendan Fitzgerald blasted a shot through traffic and into the net from the right point.
That was the only scoring through the second intermission, but 10 seconds into the third period, Adam Flammang banged in the rebound of a quick Cedar Rapids shot that had resulted from a faceoff win in the Black Hawks' zone.
Waterloo's breakthrough against goalie Bruno Bruveris came with 4:33 to go in regulation. With the puck pinballing around the goalmouth after Mason Reiners' initial shot, Jake Schneider banged it into an open side from just outside the crease.
The Hawks brought Emmett Croteau to the bench with under three minutes to play, and Cedar Rapids added a pair of empty net goals, first from Robert Flinton and then from Flammang.
The Black Hawks return home Saturday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints and to celebrate 60 seasons of hockey in the Cedar Valley. Waterloo will wear special jerseys which will be auctioned after the game to benefit Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity. For seats, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or visit tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
