Coyotes take rubber match

EDINBURG, TX- The Edinburg Coyotes (23-32) scored early and often in a 7-3 win over the Amarillo Dillas (33-24) to take Game 3 as well as the series Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. With the win, Coyotes pull to within four games behind the Laredo Broncos for the fourth and final spot in the playoffs. Laredo Lost to the San Angelo Colts 7-6.

Eric Montoya (6-2) played with poise throughout the game even after a bench clearing scuffle before the top of the seventh inning that delayed the game for 15 minutes but still managed to keep the game out of reach. Montoya went seven stout innings giving up one earned run on seven hits. Marcus Castillo (7-3) picked up the loss for the Dillas as he went seven innings allowing seven runs on 11 hits. With Coyotes up by one run in the bottom of the third, Brandon McConnell hit a three-run homer of the left field fence to give the Coyotes a 4-0 edge.

In the bottom of the fourth, Mayobanex Santana doubled to center and came in to score off a throwing error by Dillas right fielder Stephen Douglas to extend the Coyote lead to five. The Dillas answered in the top of the fifth off an RBI sacrifice fly from Josh Ashton that brought in Brian Bueno. Dillas added another run off an RBI single from Keith Brachold to make the score 5-2. In the next inning, Coyotes put up two runs of their own off RBI singles from Alex Entrekin and Robert Matlock to give the Coyotes a comfortable 7-2 lead.

Dillas squandered another run in the seventh but Coyotes' reliever Bryan Heaston shut the door on any Dillas rally. Coyotes will take on the Broncos tomorrow night in an important two-game series at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05. Coyotes will have their Fourth of July fireworks tomorrow after the it was rescheduled due to bad weather on July 4.
