Coyotes Sweep Crucial Series

EDINBURG, Texas- The Edinburg Coyotes closed their last home game out with a bang after sweeping the Laredo Broncos 4-1 Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Coyotes are now five games ahead of Laredo for the fourth and final playoff spot with six games remaining in the schedule.

The Coyotes have now won seven consecutive games and have pushed the magic number to one. Coyotes (40-40) have also climbed back to .500 for the season after winning back-to-back sweeps with the Alexandria Aces and the Broncos (37-47).

Coyotes had their ace on the mound with Eric Montoya (10-2) to end the final home game as he pitched a solid outing going seven innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out six.

The Coyotes struck first in the second inning after Eric Gonzalez lead off with a walk and later advanced to second on a single from Mayobanex Santana. They both advanced a base after Robert Matlock was hit by a pitch. Alex Entrekin then hit a two-run RBI single to left field bringing in Gonzalez and Santana for 2-0 lead. Angelo Fermin then hit an RBI single to right field for a 3-0 edge.

The Broncos answered back in the top of the fourth when Matt Imwalle led the inning off with a double to center field. After back-to-back walks to Dwayne White and Arnoldo Ponce, Ivan Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to center field bringing in Imwalle to cut the lead to two.

In the bottom of the frame, Coyotes would add a run of their own after Fermin hit RBI double to center field bringing in Entrekin from second for a 4-1 lead.

Coyotes closer Luke Prihoda picked up his eighth save of the season after pitching a shutting out the ninth inning.

The Edinburg Coyotes will travel to Laredo for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday. After the series with the Broncos, Coyotes will head to San Angelo for a three-game series. If the Coyotes win at least one of the road games or Broncos lose one game through the remainder of the season, Coyotes are in the playoffs.
