Kane County Cougars News Release
BELOIT, Wisc. - After a 5-2 victory in game one was guided by Lane Adams's offensive heroics, the Kane County Cougars dropped the nightcap of their doubleheader in a 3-2 loss to the Beloit Snappers on Tuesday at Pohlman Field.
Adams drove home all five runs for the Cougars (7-5) in the opener as his RBI double in the first brought Danny Mateo to the dish. Beloit evened the game in the second with their only tally off Scott Alexander (1-0), who lasted five innings.
It stayed even until the fifth when Adams cracked a two-run single through a drawn-in infield to put the Cougars up by two. Miguel Sano brought Beloit (6-6) a run closer as he blasted his fifth dinger of the season. Adams put the ballgame out of reach in the top of the seventh with a triple to bring home Michael Antonio and Jorge Bonifacio. Jason Mitchell (S, 1) nailed down the final six outs to give the Cougars their fourth consecutive win.
That winning streak was halted in game two although the Cougars did take the initial lead once again. Henry Moreno singled with two outs off starter Matt Tomshaw and took third on a two-bagger by Jin-Ho Shin. Tomshaw uncorked a wild pitch to bring home Moreno, putting the Cougars on top.
Beloit took advantage of an Edwin Carl throwing error in the bottom of the fourth to grab a 2-1 lead. Carl fanned seven in his five frames while not allowing an earned run. In the seventh, Clint Dempster (1-1) couldn't save it for A.J. Achter, who worked three perfect innings. Back-to-back singled turned into a run as Moreno popped a sac fly to score Bonifacio.
Mike Giovenco (0-1) couldn't keep the contest tied. He walked Rory Rhodes to start the bottom of the seventh while a sac bunt pushed pinch-runner A.J. Pettersen to second. Giovenco then unleashed two wild pitches, advancing Pettersen all the way to the plate with the winning tally.
The Cougars finish their three-game series in Beloit on Wednesday morning at 11:00 with right-hander Kellen Moen (0-0) starting against lefty Steven Gruver (0-1). You can listen to the broadcast on www.kccougars.com. The Cougars return home on Thursday, April 19 to take on the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch. Tickets are available by calling the Cougars' box office (630) 232-8811 or www.kccougars.com.
