
Chiefs win 6-2 over Kernels

PEORIA, Illinois - Peoria's Ryan Cuneo smacked out two home runs with four runs batted in as the Chiefs topped the Kernels 6-2 at O'Brien Field on Monday night. The Kernels offense was held to five hits, three of them by Andy Workman.
Peoria put together a two out rally to plate a single run in the first inning. Rafael Lopez singled to center with two outs. Then, Ryan Cuneo singled to right field to put runners at the corners. Paul Hoilman followed with a RBI double down the left field line to score Lopez and give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Ryan Cuneo extended the Chiefs lead to 3-0 with a two-run line drive home run to right field in the third inning. It was Cuneo's second home run in four games this season. Andy Workman got the Kernels on the board in the fourth inning when he launched a solo home run to left field, cutting Peoria's lead to 3-1. Workman finished the night with three hits and a walk.
Austin Wood (2-1) started for the Kernels on the mound and went four innings, taking the loss. He allowed three runs on five hits while striking out one and walking two. Cuneo delivered again the fifth inning for Peoria for his second two-run home run of the night. Cuneo's second long ball was launched to right to give the Chiefs a 5-1 lead. In the sixth inning Oliver Zapata crushed a solo home run to right field to give Peoria a 6-1 lead.
Frank DeJiulio went 1.2 innings in relief for the Kernels. He allowed three runs on five hits while striking out two, walking none, and allowing two home runs. Stephen Tromblee pitched 2.1 innings in relief for the Kernels, allowing no runs on one hit. He struck out none and walked one.
Michael Jensen (3-0) started for Peoria, went six innings, and picked up the victory. He allowed one run on three hits while striking out five and walking two. The Kernels added a run in the seventh inning, trimming the Chiefs lead to 6-2. Abel Baker scored when Wendell Soto reached on a fielder's choice.
Austin Reed pitched two innings in relief for Peoria, allowing one run on two hits. Jeff Lorick pitched the ninth inning for the Chiefs, allowing no runs on no hits.
The Kernels continue the three game series at Peoria Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. The nine game road trip sends the Kernels to Peoria, Bowling Green, and Dayton. The team returns home on April 26 at 6:35 p.m. vs. South Bend. There is a promotion during all 12 of the Kernels April home games.
