Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars (11-16) couldn't disappoint their largest crowd of the year, and they didn't. They used early and late offense to avoid the sweep against the Sioux City Explorers (17-11) with a 5-1 win in front of 6,234 at Northwestern Medicine Field Thursday night.

For the third straight night, the Cougars scored in the 1st inning as Kacy Clemens blasted his third homer of the year off the top of the video board. Nick Zammarelli followed up with a solo shot in the 2nd, making it a 3-0 Cougars lead.

The Cougar bats went silent for a bit after that, but Tyler Viza (1-0) held the Explorers in check. He only coughed up one run in five and one-third innings with no walks and five strikeouts. It was Viza's first win of the year and it came in his first appearance off of the injured list. The Cougar bullpen followed up with three and one-third innings of scoreless baseball. Andrew Stout, Kyle Huckaby and Mark SEyler teamed up for just three hits and three strikeouts.

Anfernee Seymour added two more runs in the 7th with a two-run double. It was the first time the Cougars scored after the 1st inning since Monday.

Now the Cougars embark on their longest road trip of the season, 11 games in 10 days. It starts with a three-game series visiting the Milwaukee Milkmen. The Cougars don't return home until June 29th hosting Gary.
