Cougars Historic Season Comes to an End After Double OT Loss to Portland

PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The Prince George Cougars' season has come to an end after dropping a 2-1 double overtime thriller to the Portland Winterhawks, Monday at the CN Centre.

Josh Davies played hero for the Winterhawks, scoring the double-overtime winner at 5:40. Borya Valis supplied the lone tally in Game 6 for the Cougars at 5:45, while Joshua Ravensbergen was outstanding in the Cougar crease, making 36 saves, and was named the game's first star. Jan Špunar for Portland was equally terrific for the visitors, making 48 saves, and was named the game's second star.

GOALS:

2nd Period:

1-0 Winterhawks at 19:00 - Nate Danielson (5) assisted by Jack O'Brien and Marcus Nguyen // Jack O'Brien was able to sneak the puck ahead to Nate Danielson in the offensive zone. Ravesnbergen initially stopped Danielson's shot, and the Cougar netminder kicked out the puck again off a weird bounce. The period came to an end; however, the play went under review and it was deemed the puck crossed the line to give Portland a late second-period lead.

3rd Period:

1-1 Cougars at 5:45 - Borya Valis (9) assisted by Zac Funk and Riley Heidt // The Cats did excellent work in the offensive zone, and they were able to convert. Riley Heidt slid the puck behind the net to Zac Funk who then gave a one-touch feed to Valis in front of the goal and he made no mistake to tie Game 6 early in the third period.

2nd Overtime

2-1 Winterhawks at 5:40 - Josh Davies (5) assisted by Josh Mori and Tyson Jugnauth // The Cougars had a terrific chance in front of the Portland goal that was blocked, and it translated into a chance the other way for Portland, and it was Florida Panthers prospect Josh Davies who wristed a shot from the right circle off the post and in past Ravensbergen to give the Winterhawks the victory and their first trip to the WHL Championship Series since 2014.
