
Cougars give extra effort to defeat the Chiefs, 5-4

Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars are showing the Midwest League why they're the team to beat. On Sunday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium, the Cougars (22-8) erased a 4-0 deficit to beat the Peoria Chiefs (16-13) in 10 innings, 5-4.
John Suomi was the hero of the hour, delivering a two-out RBI single, plating home John McCurdy for the game winner. McCurdy started the inning with a single off losing pitcher, Brian Flynn (0-1), and was advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Brant Colamarino, setting up Suomi's dramatic hit. Suomi tied the game in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly; scoring Nelson Cruz, who tripled with one out.
Cristian Gonzalez (3-0) hurled a scoreless 10th inning to pick up the win for Kane County. Gonzalez is now tied with Chris Shank for the most wins out of the bullpen.
With the Cougars trailing 4-0 in the seventh inning. Nelson Cruz began the inning with a monster home run over the left field deck. Suomi followed with a single off Peoria starter, Andy Cavazos, who retired the next two batters. The two-out magic came to life when Francis Gomez brought the Cougars within two by singling to center field. McCurdy followed with his second hit of the game, an RBI single, making it 4-3 Peoria.
The Chiefs began the game in the right direction, taking an early 1-0 lead, with a two-out run in the third. Mike McCoy began the rally with a one out walk, stole second base, and later scored on Tyler Parker's RBI single. Peoria added three runs and knocked Murphy out of the game in the sixth inning.
The Cougars continue their 8-game homestand tomorrow night - beginning a four-game series with the South Bend Silver Hawks. Game time from Elfstrom Stadium on Monday night is 6:00 PM with the gates opening at 4:00 PM. Chris Mowday RHP (1-2, 5.79) is on the hill for the Cougars, he'll go opposite Adriano Rosario RHP (1-1, 2.37) will make the start for South Bend.
