GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars (2-0) hung on for their first shutout of the season as they blanked the Clinton LumberKings (0-2) by a score of 3-0 at Northwestern Medicine Field Friday night.

Both starting pitchers set the tone as Jon Duplantier and Danny Garcia (0-1) worked scoreless games through five innings.

Duplantier didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning when Anthony Jimenez led off the frame with a single, but the right-hander finished off the frame with a pair of strikeouts and eight on the night in his Midwest League debut.

The Cougars grabbed their first run in the bottom of the sixth without recording a hit. After Garcia walked Jazz Chisholm his final batter was Ramon Hernandez who flied out to right field. Marvin Gorgas took the mound and walked Kyle Smith with two outs. With two runners on, an errant throw from catcher Yojhan Quevedo allowed Chisholm to reach third base. Chisholm later scored on a wild pitch to break the scoreless tie.

The Cougars' bullpen pulled through again tossing four scoreless frames. Wei-Chieh Huang (1-0) allowed only one hit and one walk through innings 6-7. Jeferson Mejia earned a hold with a shutout eighth.

Before Tyler Mark took the mound in the ninth, the Cougars added two insurance runs thanks to Jason Morozowski and Manny Jefferson.

With a 3-0 lead, two Cougar errors by Hernandez allowed Clinton to bring the tying run up. Mark got Jimenez to fly out and Gareth Morgan to ground out for his first save of the year.

The Cougars and LumberKings continue this series in Clinton on Saturday evening. Sam McWilliams makes his 2017 debut against Clinton's Brandon Miller. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Coverage on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com begins at 6:15 p.m.
