Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that pitchers Jason Ray and Mickey Storey have joined the Cougars and will be available for tonight's 6 p.m. game against the Burlington Bees. To make room for the addition of players, pitcher Leonardo Espinal has been promoted to the Stockton Ports (A-Advanced), while another pitcher, Jose Guzman, has been placed on the disabled list with a back injury. The Cougars' current roster remains at 25 players as the squad continues a four-game home series against division foe Burlington tonight at Elfstrom Stadium.
Ray (8th Rd, 2005) returns to Kane County after spending part of the '06 season at Elfstrom Stadium. As a Cougar in '06, Ray started 13 games - posting a 6-1 mark, 3.02 ERA, and earning an All-Star Game nod that summer as a Midwest Leaguer. The right-hander was injured and missed the entire the 2008 season, last pitching in an official game on June 2, 2007.
Storey (31st Rd, 2008) becomes the 13th member of the Oakland '08 draft class on Kane County's current roster. The righty pitched in 14 games for the A's Rookie League affiliate last summer, all relief appearances, and was 2-2 with a 3.27 ERA.
Espinal's promotion to the Ports comes after 49 career appearances for the Cougars. The 6-foot-4 righthander pitched in 40 games for the Cougars in '08, winning five games. Guzman moves to the disabled list after saving four games for the Cougars so far in '09.
Kane County (20-11), which leads the Midwest League's Western Division by 1.5 games over Clinton, hopes to continue the recent power surge against the Bees tonight at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars have scored a combined 31 runs in the past two games (18-3 win at Dayton on Sunday, 13-1 win vs. Burlington last night). Anthony Capra (0-1, 2.00) will oppose Bryan Casey (1-3, 2.82).
