Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL – The Kane County Cougars advanced to the Midwest League Western Division Championship Series with a 3 – 2 win over the Peoria Chiefs Friday night at Elfstrom Stadium. Dallas Braden combined with three relievers to keep the league's top offense off the scoreboard for the final four innings and will travel to Clinton, IA on Saturday for game one of the WDCS.

The Cougars got on the scoreboard breaking the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. Luke Appert blasted a two run double off of the center field wall scoring Kory Wayment and Nick Rogers giving Kane County a 2 – 0 lead.

Cougars starting pitcher Dallas Braden kept the Chiefs off balance through the first 4.2 innings until Joe Mather connected for a two run homer over the left field wall to tie the game at 2 – 2.

Kane County regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Dan Putnam walked on four pitches with the bases loaded scoring Brian Ingram to take a 3 – 2 lead.

Braden and the bullpen took it from there only allowing two more hits over the final four innings to the Chiefs. Braden went seven innings in his best performance on the season allowing just the two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

The Cougars went to the bullpen in the top of the eighth inning as Dan Fyvie struck out the only hitter he faced with Justin Crowder getting the final two outs to take the 3 – 2 lead to the ninth inning. Jason Windsor came on from the pen for the final inning and sat down the Chiefs in order in the top of the ninth to win the game and the best of three game series. The Cougars advance to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since winning the championship in 2001.

Game one of the Divisional Championship Series begins in Clinton on Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. game. The Cougars will send Chris Dunwell to the mound to face the Lumber Kings Matt Farnum at Alliant Energy Field.
