
Cotts and Alvarez Named Year-End All-Stars

BIRMINGHAM, AL â The day after clinching the Western Division second-half title, two Birmingham Barons were named to the Southern League Year-End All-Star Team. Left-handed pitcher Neal Cotts and first baseman Gabe Alvarez were honored as All-Stars with Cotts being named the best left-handed pitcher and Alvarez getting the nod as best utility man.
Cotts, who is currently in the Chicago White Sox rotation, leads the Southern League in ERA at 2.12 and also ranks among league leaders in strikeouts (4th, 131). He was promoted from Birmingham straight to the big leagues on August 10th and has made four starts for the Sox. With the Barons, Cotts was 9-6, and was named the SL Pitcher-of-the-week for August 1-7. Cotts was also named to the mid-season SL All-Star team and the Futures Game, starting both contests.
Alvarez, who has time in the majors with Detroit and San Diego, is currently ranked second in the SL in batting behind fellow teammate Scott Bikowski with a ..312 average. He is also ranked among league leaders in RBI (4th, 77), doubles (3rd, 34), on-base percentage (1st, .403) and slugging percentage (5th, .483). Alvarez was also a mid-season SL All-Star and started the game at first base.
