Huntsville Stars News Release

Huntsville, AL – The Barons survived a late Huntsville rally to win their seventh straight game, nipping the Stars, 3-2, in 10 innings on Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville (33-33) suffered its first four-game sweep this season and lost for the eighth time in nine games.

Trailing 2-0 entering the eighth, Huntsville turned to a potent combination. J.J. Hardy and Corey Hart, Thursday named year-end Southern League All-Stars, forged a tying rally. With two outs, Hardy drew his second walk of the night. Then on a 1-0 pitch from Jason Stumm, Hart sent a deep drive to left-center, clearing the wall for a game-tying, two-run homer, his 13th of the season. With two runs batted in, Hart raised his league-leading total to 90. In the ninth, Huntsville had the winning run at third with two outs, but Kris McWhirter retired Daryl Clark on a groundout to send the game to extra innings.

Birmingham threatened with two outs in the 10th, when Guillermo Reyes singled to center and Tommy Nicholson walked. Jeremy Reed, batting .407 entering the game, pinch-hit for Josh Shaffer and chopped a 3-2 pitch through the left side for the game-winning single, driving in Reyes to make it 3-2, Barons.

McWhirter (3-7) picked up his third win, going the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing only two walks. Ryan Miller (1-8) suffered his eighth loss, permitting one run on two hits and one walk with one strikeout in the ninth.

Huntsville travels to Chattanooga for their final four regular season games. In Friday night's game one, Huntsville righty Ben Hendrickson (7-5, 3.61) meets Chattanooga righty Daylan Childress (1-4, 8.10). Game time is 6:15 p.m. CT. The Bill Penney Toyota Pre-game Show starts at 6:00 p.m. CT. Stars baseball can be heard on Jammin' 1550 WLOR, ESPN 1450 WTKI and at www.huntsvillestars.com.
