Huntsville Stars News Release
The Huntsville Stars placed three players on the 2003 Southern League Year-end All-Star Team, as announced today by the league office. Third baseman Corey Hart, shortstop J.J. Hardy and centerfielder Dave Krynzel were selected to the team.
Only Mobile matched the Stars in placing a league-high three players on the squad. The year-end all-stars were chosen in a poll of the league's field managers, radio broadcasters and print media.
Each one of the Stars' outstanding trio is among thetop 10 prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers' minor league system, and all three players were also starters on the Southern League Western Division All-Star team at mid-season. Together, Hart and Krynzel lead or share the lead in five significant offensive categories. Hart, a league MVP candidate, paces the circuit in runs batted in (88), hits (142), and doubles (36). Hart is also sixth in batting average (.301) and third in extra-base hits (49).
Krynzel leads in triples (10) and shares the lead in stolen bases (42). Hardy, like Krynzel a U.S. starter in this year's All-Star Futures Game in Chicago, boasts a .282 average with 25 doubles, 12 homeruns and 62 runs batted in.
WESTERN DIVISION PLAYOFFS SET
Birmingham's 6-2 win last night clinched the second half title for Wally Backman's team and guaranteed them a chance to defend their 2002 Southern League title. The win sets the format for the best of five Western Division Playoffs. Games 1 and 2 which were already set for next Wednesday and Thursday (Sept 3rd and 4th) at 6:05 pm will pit the Stars versus the Barons once again. This will be a rematch of the 2001 Western Division Playoffs which ended with the Stars winning in five games. Game 3 will be Friday September 5th at 7 pm at the Hoover Met in Birmingham. Games 4 and 5 if necessary will be Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 6th and 7th) in Birmingham as well. Tentative game times are 1 pm and 2 pm for the final two games. The Eastern Division race for the second half is still too tight to call so the Eastern format still remains with Games 1 and 2 hosted by Carolina.
