Barons Clinch Second Half Title

HUNTSVILLE, AL – When the current eight-game road trip started, the Barons needed three wins against West Tennessee to clinch a wildcard berth into the playoffs and three more wins against Huntsville to clinch the 2nd Half Division Title.

After losing the opener against the Diamond Jaxx, the Barons reeled off six straight wins, three against West Tennessee and three against Huntsville to take care of business. The Barons will now concentrate on defending their 2002 Southern League Championship. The division playoff series against Huntsville will open September 3rd in Huntsville.

Scott Bikowski broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run in the 4th inning. Bikoswki went 3-5 with 3 RBI. Jon Hamilton added three hits. Each time the Stars scored to cut into the Barons lead, Birmingham answered right back to extend their lead, getting clutch hits when it mattered.

Carlos Castillo earned his 3rd win for the Barons allowing four hits and one run in 5.2 innings. He walked two and struck out five Stars hitters. Ryan Meaux and Jeff Bajenaru closed the game out, ensuring the win. Bajenaru, pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it official.

The Barons head into the final series of the year at home against the Greenville Braves having won 12 of their last 14 games. The offense, last in the league in runs scored a month ago, has vaulted up to fourth in the Southern League after its current tear, averaging over 10 hits per game.

The final home stand includes 7:00 PM games on Friday and Saturday night with a fireworks show to follow each game. Sunday's game is at 6:00 PM and the regular season finale is at 12:30 PM on Labor Day. The Barons will feature Dreamland BBQ Ribs, available on the RF deck for just $9.00.
