Columbus Cottonmouths News Release


COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Cottonmouths, after stumbling out of the gate to begin the season with a regulation and shootout loss, picked up a pair of wins this past week. The Snakes defeated Pensacola at home in overtime on Friday night and won their first road contest of the season in a come-from-behind win against the expansion Mississippi RiverKings. The Cottonmouths enjoy a rare Friday and Saturday night off during the regular season this weekend before hosting the Fayetteville FireAntz in a Sunday afternoon matinee at the Snake Pit. Sunday's game will be broadcast on America One Networks with both a video and audio feed, with a nominal fee for each game. A free audio-only webcast of the games is also available. Sunday, November 6 - Fayetteville at Columbus, 4:00 PM EST (Last Season vs. FAY: 7-1-0)

The Snakes will host the Fayetteville FireAntz on Sunday for the first of back-to-back Sunday matinees against them at the Columbus Civic Center. Columbus dominated the season series against Fayetteville last season, winning seven of the eight games between the two teams, the only loss being an overtime decision in the final seconds of the extra session in the first game between them last season. This year's edition of the 'Antz contains many new faces, including a new coach in Sean Gillam. Fayetteville dropped their first three games of the season before beating then-undefeated Knoxville 6-1 at home on Saturday night. PROMOTIONS: Military Appreciation Night! Friday, October 28 - Pensacola 2 at Columbus 3 (OT) (Attendance: 2,189)

The Cottonmouths atoned themselves for their opening night loss against Pensacola, defeating the Ice Flyers 3-2 in overtime on Friday night. John Sullivan scored the OT game-winner 47 seconds into the extra frame, with Brett Hammond and Orrin Hergott notching the goals in regulation. Andrew Loewen turned aside 21 of the 23 shots on goal he faced for the win in net for the Snakes while Nick Krauss made 27 saves on 30 shots on goal for Pensacola. Columbus was 1 for 3 on the power play and held the Ice Flyers scoreless in their six opportunities with the man advantage, including five consecutive Pensacola power plays in the first period.

Saturday, October 29 - Columbus 4 at Mississippi RiverKings 3 (Attendance: 2,519)

Playing in their first game in the DeSoto Civic Center as a member of the SPHL and first time for a Snakes hockey team since facing the CHL Memphis RiverKings back in 2001, Columbus came from behind to take a 4-3 victory in their first road game of the season and first-ever game against the SPHL version of the 'Kings on Saturday night. The RiverKings broke out to a 3-0 lead over the Snakes after one period and outshot Columbus 17-4 after twenty minutes, with the first goal scored by former Cottonmouth Kyle Lundale. Columbus would go to work in the second period and scored the last four goals of the game unanswered, with Jordan Braid, Levi Lind, John Sullivan, and Mitch Wall scoring once each. Ian Vigier took the win between the pipes for Columbus with 27 saves on 30 shots, while Alan Reynolds was the losing goaltender for Mississippi with 15 saves on 19 shots. Both teams scored once on the power play with Columbus having three chances with the man advantage and the RiverKings six, and just like the previous game, Columbus was on the shorthanded end of the first five penalties called on the night.

1. F John Sullivan - Sullivan scored the overtime game-winner on Friday night and the game-tying goal on Saturday.

2. F Levi Lind - Lind scored the game-winning goal on Saturday night and also added an assist in the game.

3. D Tom Maldonado - Maldonado had a two-point night on Saturday night with a pair of assists.
