June 27, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-After being acquired by the Black Hawks but before taking the ice for the first time in Waterloo, forward David Cotton was selected during the 2015 NHL Draft in south Florida on Saturday.
With the 169th overall pick - the 18th selection during the sixth round - the Carolina Hurricanes claimed the rights to the 6-3, 200-pound Boston College recruit.
The Dubuque Fighting Saints originally snagged Cotton with a fourth round pick during Phase II of the 2014 United States Hockey League Draft. Waterloo landed him as part of a March trade which sent Hayden Shaw to the Saints in exchange for Blake Hillman.
NHL Central Scouting ranked Cotton 62nd among North American skating prospects eligible to be selected in 2015. Over the winter, he starred at Cushing Academy in Massachusetts, averaging over two points per game for the Penguins.
Cotton is the first Black Hawk to be drafted by the Hurricanes. Former Waterloo defenseman Andrew Alberts did skate for Carolina for part of the 2009/10 season.
