Calgary Stampeders News Release

Calgary Stampeders fullback Rob Cote will help kick off this year's Hike for Hospice Calgary by attending the event and leading the hike. The event is held at Fish Creek Provincial Park - Glennfield Area on May 4, 2008 and begins at 9:00 a.m.

The Stampeders are pleased to again lend their support to this event, where individuals and families whose lives have been touched by Hospice Calgary hike together to remember their loved ones.

"This is my first year being involved with Hospice Calgary," said Cote. "I'm looking forward to walking with some very courageous people, whose spirit and determination have allowed them to overcome some incredible obstacles in their lives. The hike is really a celebration of life, and I hope Calgarians will come out to support the event."

Hospice Calgary has two centres of care: the Rosedale Hospice, for cancer patients reaching the end of life, and the Outreach and Education Centre to assist individuals and families who face loss, whether expected or sudden.

"The operating expenses for Rosedale Hospice are met through our partnership with the Calgary Health Region, but the funds for staffing and programs for our other centre of care are generated through donations and fundraising," said Walker.

According to Statistics Canada, more than 259,000 Canadians die each year, and that number is projected to increase by 33 per cent by the year 2020. Currently, the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association estimates that only 25 per cent of those who need it will have access to hospice palliative care. Hospice Calgary is working toward ensuring that more Calgarians receive the end-of-life care they need.

The Hike for Hospice Palliative Care is a national event, with thousands of people participating across Canada. The hike is coordinated nationally by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA) and kicks off National Hospice Palliative Care Week, taking place this year from May 4 to 10, 2008.
