THE STAKES: The Hammerheads look to move to 3-1 on the 2010 season and pick up their first road win of the season
THE SERIES: Tonight's game is the 1st of 2 meetings between the Lone Star Division Rivals in 2010.
THE IFs:
If Corpus Christi Wins
They would win their third straight game of the 2010 season
They would pick up the first road win of the season and maintain at least a share of first place.
They would even the All-Time IFL series history with the Stampede Express at 2-2.
HEAD COACHES:
Stephen Fillmore, who is also an assistant with the West Oso Bears, played three seasons for the Hammerheads. Last year Fillmore finished second on the team in tackles with 54 including 4.5 for a loss and 2.5 sacks. "I'm excited about this opportunity and want to thank the Hammerheads for believing in me", said Fillmore. "I can't wait to get to work and start building this team to contend for a championship".
Clint Dolezel was drafted by the Milwaukee Mustangs of the AFL. He then played for the Texas Terror/Houston Thunderbears, the Grand Rapids Rampage, and the Las Vegas Gladiators before settling down in Dallas to play for the Desperados. On March 12, 2006, Dolezel threw his 700th career touchdown, becoming just the third Quarterback in AFL history to do so. Dolezel, along with Wide receiver Terrill Shaw, lead the Grand Rapids Rampage to the 2001 Arena Football Championship.
After the AFL folded, Dolezel went on to become the Offensive coordinator for the Florida Firecats' of the AF2. He helped to lead the Firecats' to a 7 and 9 record and missed out on the playoffs due to a technical error by the league. He is currently a scout for the Dallas Cowboys.
DROPBACK: The Hammerheads Defeated the West Texas Roughnecks 47 - 35 on March 21st.
FORWARD MOTION: Corpus Christi will play the second game of a five game road trip in Little Rock, AR against the Arkansas Diamonds on April 3rd at 7:05pm.
TEAM NOTES/TRENDS:
A Big Win: The Hammerheads won their second straight game at home last week against long time rival West Texas. The Offense and the Defense both play a good game. The Hammerheads finally had the passing game going producing 5 scores through the air. This week the team looks to build upon last weeks success and have an even better game.
Line Stability: The Hammerheads had the third different group on the offensive line in three games. Last week James Cardenas suddenly quit the team before game time forcing Will Gavit to play center. Despite the last minute change, the line played well. With Gavit unavailable this week, who will anchor the center of the teams offensive line?
Great Halftime Adjustments: The Hammerheads defense was challenged last week by the Roughnecks four WR set in the first half. The team made some adjustments at halftime and only allowed 8 second half points. This week they'll need to be as responsive to a unpredictable Coach Dolezel.
PLAYERS/MATCHUPS TO WATCH:
It all starts up front: The Hammerheads will have another new trio of offensive linemen this week when they travel to San Angelo. The team must find a consistent combination of guys up front to protect Wes Cooper. On defense, the team still needs to get more pressure on opposing QB's.
Passing Game: The passing game certainly played much better against West Texas. Despite the improvement, the statistics still need to be better for the offence to have continued success.
Turnovers & Miscues: The Hammerheads reduced the number of turnovers last week to just one INT. The penalty yardage though still is an area the team wants to improve on. The Hammerheads are averaging 55 yards per game in penalties. They hope to see far less yellow this week on the road in San Angelo
Coaching Staff: Rookie Head Coach Stephen Fillmore and Offensive Coordinator Schuyler Anderson did a great job at making halftime adjustment last week against West Texas to take control of a See-Saw game. However, there are still a couple of "Head Scratches" each week in the play calling. The team must think high percentage in the play calling as the season wears on.
KICKER WANTED... Forward Applications to the Hammerheads: Three weeks in a row the kicking game has been, well, bad. The missed FG's and PAT's aside, the kickoffs have been consistently short setting opponents up in good starting field position. The team may have its third kicker in 4 games this week.
