Swashbucklers Sink Hammerheads Playoffs Hopes

Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release
Lake Charles, LA - The Corpus Christi Hammerheads headed into the post season on a high note. The team had won two consecutive games and was clicking on all cylinders on both sides of the ball. Saturday night however, everything that had been going right suddenly all went wrong as Louisiana trounced the Hammerheads 59-20 in the first round of the SIFL playoffs.
Corpus Christi started the game in ominous fashion when QB Anthony Andre threw the first of 7 interceptions on the night in the games first offensive series. After that things just kept getting worse for Corpus Christi as the offense sputtered and turned the ball over 8 times, were stopped on downs 3 other times and missed a number of opportunities.
"We just couldn't get anything going all night long", said Hammerheads Head Coach Dustin Almond. "I'm not taking anything away from Louisiana, but most of our struggles were self inflicted". Almond went on to add it was as if "the offense was playing together for the very first time".
Corpus Christi's defense did manage to keep the Hammerheads in the game for almost three quarters holding the Swashbucklers to 160 yards of total offense and forcing 4 turnovers on the night. In the end though, Corpus Christi's inability to score, sealed their fate.
With the 2011 season now behind them, a number of questions stand out for Corpus Christi. Will they return to the SIFL or will they join/form a new league? A number of issues over the course of the season have left many to speculate that the team, (along with Houston and Rio Grande Valley), would not return to the SIFL for 2012. Another pressing issue is the status of Head Coach Dustin Almond. Will Almond return to coach the team next season or attempt to continue his playing career? Almond was a member of the Dallas Vigilantes of the AFL before an injury ended his season. Finally, what players will Corpus Christi return next season to form the nucleus of the team?
All of theses questions have to be answered soon in order for the team to start preparing for the 2012 season.
