CALGARY, AB - The National Lacrosse League (NLL) announced today that Roughnecks' Head Coach Troy Cordingley is this season's winner of the Les Bartley Award, naming him Head Coach of the Year.
"It's great for him to be voted on by his peers, the coaches, general managers and the executives within the league, for his overwhelming accomplishments and exceptional 12-4 season," said Roughnecks' President and General Manager Brad Banister.
"He's a great motivator and his enthusiastic nature and competitiveness is contagious throughout the dressing room."
In just his second season with the Riggers, Cordingley has set the bar high for the Roughnecks and has continued to do so throughout their playoff run.
"I'm happy for him. He's the ultimate player's coach and his passion for the game is second to none," commented Roughnecks' defenceman Bruce Codd.
"Certainly it goes back to last year and the systems he originally put in place. Guys had a better understanding of those systems and the direction he wanted everyone to head. He is big part of what has kept us grounded when we were 5-0 to start the season, and he's kept us grounded in the big picture of things."
Leading his team to an impressive 12-4 record during the 2009 regular season and top overall seed in the 2009 playoffs, Cordingley has implemented a "team first" mentality in the players, focusing on group goals compared to individual ones.
"Troy makes coming to the rink fun and focuses on a team atmosphere instead of individual efforts. He definitely surrounds himself with a solid group of coaches, which is vital to any team's success," added Codd. "He trusts his coaches, and that's very important in the long run."
During the 2008 season, Cordingley helped guide the Roughnecks to a 7-9 record.
Cordingley played professional lacrosse for nine years before becoming assistant coach for the Buffalo Bandits in 2003.
Prior to his coaching years, Cordingley was a second round draft pick of the Buffalo Bandits during the 1993 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. Cordingley spent a majority of his career with Buffalo, winning two championships in 1993 and 1996.
During his playing days, Cordingley also suited up for Rochester and Albany before announcing his retirement in 2001 due to an ankle injury. In his 96-game NLL career, the native of Oakville, Ontario, notched 143 goals and 345 helpers.
Cordingley spends his summer months working as General Manager and Head Coach of the Brampton Excelsiors of the Ontario Lacrosse Association.
Outside of lacrosse, Cordingley works in the classroom as a Grade 1 teacher in Port Credit, Ontario's Forest Avenue Public School.
The Calgary Roughnecks face the San Jose Stealth this Saturday in what is anticipated to be a heated Western Division Final at the Pengrowth Saddledome. Game time is 7:00 p.m. MT.
