Charleston RiverDogs News Release

(Charleston-SC)- Brent Cordell hit a pair of three-run homeruns, one from each side of the plate, and added a two-run triple as the Charleston RiverDogs offense exploded for a season-high 16 runs and 17 hits ending a four-game losing streak and defeating the Asheville Tourists 16-8 in front of 3,147 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Cordell hit his first homerun from the right side of the plate as part of a four-run first inning for Charleston. His triple keyed a 4-run fifth inning for the RiverDogs. In the eighth, Cordell put a capper on the evening with his second three-run blast, this time from the left side of the plate.

The RiverDogs catcher and 23rd round selection in the 2001 June Draft raised his average 44 points and doubled his RBI total with eight for the evening.

An offensive shootout the entire way, Asheville took a 6-4 lead in the fourth on a Ryan Spilborghs two-run homerun.

The RiverDogs battled back with four in the fifth off Asheville reliever Mike Watson (0-1) to take the lead and ensure RiverDogs starter Scott Autrey (4-0) the victory. Autrey allowed nine hits and six runs in five innings. In his first outing of 2003, Watson gave up nine runs, seven earned, in two-plus innings of work.

The Tourists (10-20) cut the deficit to 8-7 in the top of the seventh before the RiverDogs (16-12) put the game away with five runs the bottom half of the inning.

Vince Harrison was 4-for-5 for Charleston with two doubles and two RBI. John-Paul Davis was on base four times and had three hits and 2 RBI. Wes Bankston had two hits including his third homerun of the season, a two-run blast in the eighth.

Ryan Riley broke an 0-for-20 draught with two hits for the RiverDogs, who had scored less than four runs in six of the previous seven games.

Seven of the nine starters for Asheville had at least one hit including Bernie Gonzalez who was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple.

Jeff Baker, three-time All-American at Clemson University, had three hits and his first three professional RBI for the Tourists.

The rubber match of the series is Monday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Left-handed pitcher Jeff Ridgway (0-2) will make the start for Charleston. Right-hander Darren Clarke (1-1) gets the call for the Tourists on a Roper & Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Monday.

Game time is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
