Conway Shines; Grizzlies Fall in Exhibition Opener

SAUGET, IL - Former Triad High School star Aaron Conway belted a two-run homer and made a spectacular catch in the outfield, but the Gateway Grizzlies fell to the Southern Illinois Miners 6-5 in the first exhibition game of the season on Wednesday afternoon. A crowd of 2,358, mainly kids, saw the Grizzlies exhibition opener.

Conway, a Troy, IL native, drove in two of the Grizzlies five runs. Antone DeJesus and Case Rigby drove in the other Grizzlies runs.

Blair Springfield, Vladimir Frias, Jerod Yakubik, Landon Hernandez, Conway, Rigby and Richie Jimenez accounted for the Grizzlies seven hits. No players had more than one hit for the Grizzlies.

Cale Johnson got the start for the Grizzlies and surrendered three runs on two hits in three innings. Johnson walked two and struck out one.

Erik Carillo and Ryan Juarez worked two scoreless innings of relief for the Grizzlies. Carillo only allowed one base runner, via a walk, while Juarez scattered two hits.

Gateway returns to action for their exhibition road opener on Thursday morning. The Grizzlies take on the Miners at 10:05 A.M. at Rent One Park.
