Miners Beat Grizzlies at Gateway

Sauget, IL - The Miners made most of their first visit to GCS Ballpark this season by defeating the Gateway Grizzlies 6-5 in comeback fashion.
The Miners got on the board first with a sacrifice fly by center fielder Sean Harrell to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. The Miners added two more runs in the top of the second with a RBI triple by third baseman Carlos Mendez and a RBI single by second baseman Sean Wilson off Grizzlies starter Cale Johnson.
The Grizzlies came right back in the bottom of the second with a one out double by catcher Landon Hernandez. Center fielder Antone DeJesus grounded out to Miners starter Daniel Calhoun to bring in another run. After a RBI single by DH Case Rigby, Aaron Conway hit a two run home run to give the Grizzlies a 4-3 lead heading into the top of the third.
It wasn?t until the bottom of the seventh inning for Gateway where the offense came back after stellar bullpen work by the Miners and Grizzlies. Right fielder Richie Jimenez Jr. led off the inning with a double and then advanced to third on a Blair Springfield single. This eventually set up another run for the Grizzlies as a wild pitch by Casey Fry gave the Grizzlies a 5-3 lead.
Then in the top of the eighth inning, the Miners came right back. After Cannon Lester was hit by a pitch by Grizzlies reliever Travis Ruppel, back to back singles by Jack Kaase and Andrew Heck set up a RBI groundout by Shawn Ward. Phil Butler gave the Miners their first lead since the top of the second with a two out two run double to give the Miners a 6-5 lead.
Anthony Collazo, Albert Ayala, and Max Peterson also pitched in relief. Combined, they threw 5 innings and only allowed one hit.
Tomorrow the Miners return to Rent One Park as they welcome the Gateway Grizzlies for their first exhibition home game of the 2012 season. First pitch is scheduled for 10:05 am.
