Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

The schedule has been finalized, the countdown continues, the anticipation grows and the new ballpark continues to grow each and every day. Now that the schedule has been released, the pieces are in place, and we can all mark April 14th down on our calendars. On April 14th 2005, the brand new downtown Ballpark will open up when the Hagerstown Suns come to town and begin a new era of baseball in the city of Charleston. In this week's newsletter, we will discuss the intricacies of the schedule, and we will preview Josh Brown, one of the newest members of the Front Office. Just a reminder, opening day is just 157 days away.

Josh Brown is a native West Virginian and has lived in the area for 25 years. He has a degree in Sports Management and Marketing from Marshall University. While he will do most of his work out of a Huntington office, Josh will make his presence felt in the city of Charleston. In addition to majoring in Sports Management and Marketing, Josh Brown minored in Business and Sociology during his 5-year stint with the Thundering Herd. Josh, 25 has been happily married to his wife Amber for the past 4 and half years. He is from the Huntington area and has a true passion for sports. While he loves working in baseball, Josh's favorite sport is hockey. Ironically, he met his wife at a Huntington Blizzard game. He enjoys the game of hockey because it is the sport which he believes takes the most amount of skill and is considered by many to be the fastest major sport in the world. His favorite sports teams include the Edmonton Oilers, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago White Sox. This is Josh's first job in Sports, and he is very excited to work with West Virginia Baseball LLC. One of his biggest goals in life is to be successful in the world of sports. He views this opportunity as a stepping stone toward putting his education to great use and he cannot see himself doing anything else.

While at Marshall University, Josh worked with the Athletic Department in a couple of different capacities. He was involved with the volleyball team, and the men's and women's soccer teams, assisting in operations. Josh also did some work with the Sports Information Department in the Spring and Fall of 2003. From November of 2003 until May of 2004 he worked as an intern for ISP, the sponsorship and marketing arm of Marshall University. Josh is one of five Ticket Account Executives who have been brought on for the 2005 season and as mentioned earlier, will do a lot of his work out of the Huntington office.

At the end of last week the General Managers of the South Atlantic League came together and were able to finalize the schedule for the 2005 season.

The schedule was released yesterday and its official, April 14th marks opening day at the new ballpark in downtown Charleston. The season begins on April 7th with a 7 game road trip, beginning with a 4 game series at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown against the Suns. After the opening series against Hagerstown, our boys of summer will head to Lexington to take on the rival Legends at Applebee's Park in a 3 game series before heading home for opening day. The way the schedule is constructed this season, we will see a lot of the Lexington Legends. Matter of fact, we will play Lexington a grand total of 32 times this season. 18 of those games against Lexington will be at home. We will not see some of the Southern Division opponents at all in the 2005 season. Augusta, Capital City, Charlie South, Columbus, Rome, and Savannah are the 6 teams that we will not see at all unless we meet them in the playoffs. In addition to their 32 games against the Lexington Legends, we will also play 20 games against Lakewood, Hagerstown, and Delmarva. The Lake County Captains will come to Charleston 8 times while we head to Eastlake Ballpark for the other 8 games of the 16 game season series.

Finally, we will play 4 games at home and 4 away against the Hickory Crawdads, Asheville Tourists, Greensboro Bats and Kannapolis Intimidators.

The divisional format will stay the same. There will be a first and second half champion, and there will still be a Northern and Southern Division. The members of each division will stay the same as well. The schedule includes a total of 11 Tuesday games, 9 Friday games and 12 Saturday games. There will be 8 home games in the month of April, 19 home games in May, 10 home games in June, 16 home games in July, 16 more at home in August and one home game in the beginning of September.

Next week we will feature Bill Applebee, a Ticket Sales Executive in his first year with West Virginia Baseball LLC and we will take a look at some of the Milwaukee Brewers' prospects who were at the Single A and rookie level during the 2004 season. Thank you for subscribing and have a wonderful week.
