Albany Firebirds News Release
Albany, N.Y., April 6, 2004 â After nearly two weeks of preseason training camp, Albany Conquest Head Coach Steve Matthews has decided which 21 men will make up his team's 2004 roster. The Albany Conquest, back-to-back Northeast Division Champions of arenafootball2 (af2), will open the regular season on the road against the Cape Fear Wildcats Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Fayetteville, N.C. The team's home opener is against the Manchester Wolves on April 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pepsi Arena featuring performances by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
"This is a solid group of players and I am confident in the abilities of each one of them," said Coach Matthews. "We have our first regular season game on Saturday against Cape Fear and we're ready to go," added Coach Matthews.
Coach Matthews will keep two quarterbacks for the 2004 season. Also finding roster spots with the team were Ron Simone (FB/LB), Thomas Herron (OL/DL), and Steven Green (K), all of which played for Coach Matthews when he was Offensive Coordinator for the Memphis Xplorers in 2003. Calvin Ceaser (WR/DB), who played for the Cape Fear Wildcats last season, is also on the team's 21 men roster, along with Abdallah Wiggins, who was assigned during the Conquest's training camp and played for the Greensboro Prowlers in 2003 recording 5.5 sacks playing in 11 games.
Rookies in af2 that have been kept for the team's 2004 season are former Chicago Bears defensive back Travis Coleman (DS, Hampton University), Mike Loniewski (OL/DL, Marist College), Timothy Perren (FB/LB, Liberty University), and Terrell Black (OL/DL, Murray State).
