April 6, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - Quad City offensive specialist JEFF HEWITT, Tennessee Valley wide receiver/defensive back JERRIAN JAMES and Rio Grande Valley offensive/defensive lineman KARLETON THOMAS have been named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 1 of the 2004 season.

BABY RUTH REAL DEAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Hewitt (5-11, 195, Southwest Missouri State), who is in his third season, captured the second Offensive Player of the Week award of his af2 career by scoring five touchdowns in the Steamwheelers' opening night 71-32 win over Manchester. Hewitt caught four passes, three for touchdowns, totaling 104 yards and he electrified the hometown crowd with two 58-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns. Overall, Hewitt amassed 192 yards on six kick returns and he had a 41-yard missed field goal return to total 337 all-purpose yards. This is Hewitt's third weekly accolade, as along with the other Offensive Player of the Week honor, he also was named ADT Defensive Player of the Week during Week 10 of the 2003 season.

U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK

James (6-foot, 190, Houston), in his third season, proved his worth as an all-around threat in the Vipers' 60-35 win over Bakersfield on Saturday night. Rushing three times for three yards and one touchdown, James also caught six passes for a game-high 122 yards and two more scores. He returned a kickoff for 28 yards in the second quarter, which led to the Vipers' second touchdown of the night two players later. On the defensive side of the ball, James made 2.5 tackles (2UA-1AT) and he registered an interception at the end of the first half to keep the Blitz from taking the lead into halftime. This is the third weekly award of James' career. He earned this same honor in Week 9 of last season, and he was named ADT Defensive Player of the Week for Week 5 of the 2002 season.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Thomas (6-5, 278, Southwest Missouri State), who is in his second season, led an outstanding defensive effort by the expansion Rio Grande Valley Dorados in their 37-6 opening night win over the first-year Laredo Law. Thomas helped keep the pressure on the Law QBs all night, accounting for three of the team's 10 total sacks, which is the second most sacks by a team in a single game in af2 history. He also recorded five tackles (4UA-2AT), two tackles for a loss of four yards and he forced a fumble. Thanks in part to Thomas' efforts, the Law were held to the third lowest point total in af2 history. This is the first weekly honor of Thomas' af2 career.
