Connecticut Sun News Release
Uncasville, CT - Connecticut Sun forwards Alyssa Thomas and Jonquel Jones were named to the WNBA All-Defensive Second Team, the league announced today. This marks the third time Jones has been honored on a WNBA Defensive Team (First Team 2019, 2021). Thomas has received Second Team honors twice before (2017, 2019) as well as WNBA All-Defensive First Team honors in 2020.
Jones is one of the most prolific post defenders in the league and a consistent presence in the paint for Connecticut. This regular season, she was fourth in the league in rebounds per game (8.6) and seventh in the league in blocks per game (1.2). She also finished 12th in the league in defensive rating (91.6) and sixth in rebound percentage (16.6). Most notably, in the Sun's August 11 win over Los Angeles, Jones moved into first all-time in Connecticut Sun franchise history in blocks with 270 career blocked shots.
Thomas is known for her defensive versatility, guarding both the guard and post positions throughout her eight-year WNBA career. The two-time WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Month (May, July 2022) finished fifth in the league in rebounding (8.2) and second in the league in steals (1.7). Thomas also moved into second all-time in rebounds (1,665) and third all-time in steals (359) in Connecticut Sun franchise history this season. The 6-2 forward has gone 21 straight games with at least one steal, the longest active streak in the WNBA.
Jones, Thomas and the Sun are back in action Wednesday, August 30 in Game 2 of the WNBA Semifinals against the Chicago Sky at 8:00 P.M. EST at Wintrust Arena.
The Connecticut Sun celebrates its 20th Anniversary as a franchise this year. For additional information or to purchase tickets, visit www.connecticutsun.com.
