Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - The West Coast Hockey League announced today that the Bakersfield Condors have been selected as having the league's top Community Development Program, and Best Game Presentation for the 2002-03 season. The honors bring the franchise's total to nine front office awards in the last five seasons. The team has also won nine league honors this season alone, including those based on the team's performance on the ice.
It's the second season in a row that the Condors Community Relations Department has been honored by the WCHL. The award is given to the Condors "in recognition of their exceptional outreach efforts" within the Bakersfield community. Community Relations Director John Ayre has spread the team out over Kern County, with dozens of school appearances this season, in addition to meeting with churches, festivals and fundraisers throughout the year.
Over $369,000 has been collected this season through cash, goods, merchandise, and charity events such as the Tip-A-Condor dinner, "Jersey Off Our Backs" raffle and auctions and the Condors Golf Tournament. In addition, there were countless collections held during the season at games for items such as canned food, blankets, shoes and jackets. Nearly $1 million has been raised through such activities during the team's five years in Bakersfield.
The Best Game Presentation award credits the Condors for the "non-stop entertainment they provide fans during each and every game," according to the league office. Condors Director of Group Sales and In-Game Promotions, Greg May, as well as Production Director Chris Peace, oversees all aspects related to the honor, including Public Address announcements, music, video board display and contests throughout the night with fan participation.
"These are a great set of honors to win," said Condors President & GM Matthew Riley. "Our dedicated staff truly works hard and doesn't often receive the credit they deserve. This is a great pat on the back for everyone involved. We take a lot of pride in supporting the community that supports us, and putting on a great show for our fans every night."
The Condors take on the San Diego Gulls in Game Five from the San Diego Sports Arena tonight at 7:00pm. They trail the best-of-seven series, 3-1, and face elimination tonight. If they can win, it forces Game Six, which will be played At Centennial Garden on Easter Sunday, April 20th, at 6:00pm. All Condors games can be heard live on KGEO AM 1230, with "Condors Countdown" beginning 15 minutes prior to face off.
Individual tickets for Sunday's game can be purchased starting tomorrow at Noon at the Centennial Garden Box Office. The box office will open with special hours on Easter Sunday at 12:00pm should Game 6 be necessary. Tickets are also available by calling Ticketmaster at 322-2525, online at ticketmaster.com or stopping by any Ticketmaster location. Season tickets and group outings may be purchased by calling 324-PUCK (7825) or by visiting the Condors office next to Centennial Garden.
