Greensboro Generals News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - The Greensboro Generals put the wraps on the 2002-2003 season following a 3-2 loss to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Boardwalk Bullies won the best-of-five Northeast Divisional Finals series three games to one. Following a franchise best 42-21-9 regular season for 93 points and their first ever post-season berth, the Generals bid for the Kelly Cup is now over.
After a first period in which the Generals were shorthanded five times, including losing Sam Ftorek to a game-misconduct penalty, Greensboro was down 1-0. Atlantic City's Ian Walterson converted a power-play at the 5:41 mark for the lone goal of the period.
The Generals came out strong in the second period, shifting the momentum with a goal by David Whitworth just under two minutes into the frame to tie the game at 1-1. Mark Turner forged the Generals ahead with a slap shot from long range at the 3:54 mark for a 2-1 advantage. However, the Bullies' Kevin Colley answered just over a minute later, converting on one of Atlantic City's eight power play chances for the contest.
The game remained tied 2-2 well into the third period, with Greensboro and Atlantic City netminders Daniel Berthiaume and Jake Moreland answering each other with impressive saves. Finally, Atlantic City's Stefan Rivard sent a shot to the top right shelf past Berthiaume with just 4:31 left in the contest for the game-winning goal.
The Greensboro Generals staff would like to thank all of the fans and season ticket holders for their continued support of the Generals. Season tickets with special early bird prices, including a free parking pass, are currently available for the 2003-04 season and can be purchased through the Greensboro Generals office by calling (336) 218-5428.
Don't forget, the Greensboro Prowlers arenafootball2 games can now be heard on www.greensboroprowlers.com, where tickets and information are available for the 2003 af2 season. They visit the Florida Firecats tomorrow night at 7:35, with Generals' broadcaster Arley Johnson handling the play-by-play.
