Condors Dump Falcons 3-1

March 9, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors scored once in each period, and matched a season high with 56 shots on goal, as they downed the Fresno Falcons 3-1 in front of 4,921 fans at Centennial Garden on Sunday night. It was the 34th win of the season for Bakersfield, tying a franchise record set in the 1999-2000 season.

The Condors took the lead when Nate Anderson found a loose puck at the top of the Fresno crease and slammed it home for his 13th of the season at 8:13 of the opening frame. The first period was a shot-fest, with each team putting up 15 on the board. Fresno was assisted by three power plays in the first 20 minutes, none of which led to a goal.

Both teams lit the lamp in the middle period. Alex Todd took a centering feed at the top of the slot and blasted home a one-timer for his second of the season. The goal, which tied the game at 1-1, came less than seven minutes into the period. Bakersfield took over the offense after that, and eventually finished the period outshooting the Falcons 25-6 in the frame to tie a season-high for shots in a period. Paul Rosebush and Jason Jackman teamed up to break the tie later in the second, successfully completing a 2-on-1. Rosebush, parked in front of Falcons netminder Mark Gowan, whacked in Jackman's rebound for his 14th of the season to make it 2-1 after two periods.

In the third, Fresno could not get the equalizer, turned aside time and again by Kevin St. Pierre, who picked up his 30th win of the campaign. The score remained 2-1 until the waning seconds, when Bakersfield tallied a controversial empty net goal to seal the deal. Fresno had raced back to touch up an icing call, but the whistle never blew, allowing former Falcon Christian Skoryna to pot his 23rd of the season with just five seconds remaining. Fresno argued, to no avail.

The Condors improved to 11-1-1 this season against the Falcons, and widened their lead over Fresno in the standings to 10 points. They pulled within two points of idle San Diego for second place. In other WCHL action, the Anchorage Aces moved past Long Beach into fifth place with a 6-1 win over the Ice Dogs.

Bakersfield hits the road for a pair this weekend, sandwiched around a home game on Saturday night against the Idaho Steelheads. On Friday, they go to Fresno for a 7:30pm start. Saturday's game features a "Jersey Off Our Backs" Raffle and Auction after the match, which starts at 7:00pm. The Condors will wear special jerseys designed by the fans, and auction them off to raise money for CASA of Kern County. In addition, everyone in attendance will have a chance to win one of five to be raffled off during the game.

Individual tickets can be purchased at the Centennial Garden box office, which is open from 10:00-6:00pm Monday through Saturday, by calling Ticketmaster at 322-2525, online at ticketmaster.com or stopping by any Ticketmaster location.
