Omaha Lancers News Release
Jarmo Jokila's pair of goals, coupled by goals by Jack Downing and Matt Thurber, led the Lancers to a 4-2 victory over the Waterloo Black Hawks, before 1,945 fans at the Mid America Center on Tuesday, January 16th.
After a scoreless first twenty minutes of play, Jokila broke through with his 12th goal of the season, assisted by Brett Bruneteau and Barry Almeida, at 1:44 of the second period, as the Lancers began a three-goal barrage. The next goal came from Downing, who scored his second goal of the year off an assist from Matt Thurber at 16:47, which led to a 2-0 Lancer advantage after two periods of play.
The Lancers took a 3-0 lead in the third period when Thurber found the back of the net for his second goal of the season, assisted by Downing and Ben Arnt at 1:43.
It was at the point that Waterloo began a rally that cut the margin down to one goal with just under half the third period remaining. Goals from Kyle Reeds and Josh Turnbull fashioned a now precarious one goal Lancer lead at 11:17 of the final frame.
However, when Waterloo goaltender Ryan Rondeau was pulled in the final minute of play for a sixth attacker, the Lancers and Jarmo Jokila sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, assisted by Bruneteau and Andrew Conboy, with 25 seconds remaining in the game. The empty-netter gave Jokila a team-leading 13 goals for the season.
The Lancers won the contest, despite being out shot 35-31, as the home team took 16 shots in the second period, but was held to only six in the first period and nine in the final frame. Waterloo's shooting offense was stifled with only eight shots on goal in the first period, but the Black Hawks peppered Lancer goalie Drew Palmisano with 15 shots on net in the final twenty minutes of play.
Downing led the shooting offense for the Lancers with five shots on net. Mitch Ryan took six shots on goal to lead Waterloo's shooting offense.
In the power play department, Waterloo was 1-for-4, and the Lancers were held scoreless in six power play opportunities.
Omaha took seven penalties for 14 minutes, while Waterloo was called nine times for 18 minutes in penalty time.
With the victory, the Lancers moved two points in front of Lincoln in the West Division standings and are now within two points of second place Des Moines and Tri-City. Waterloo stayed tied with Cedar Rapids for the top spot in the East Division standings. Both Waterloo and Cedar Rapids also remain two points in back of overall league leader Sioux City in the Anderson Cup regular season race.
With the Omaha-Black Hawk series tied at one win apiece, the Lancers can take the lead in the season schedule with a win in Waterloo on Saturday night. Prior to that, the Lancers will meet division rival Des Moines in Iowa's capital city on Friday evening. Both games start at 7:00 PM with broadcast coverage on Magic 1490, KOMJ Radio.
