Kansas City Comets News Release


The Comets enter the week with a 7-12 record for second place in the Central Division. The second-place Comets are seven games behind the Milwaukee Wave and one game ahead of the St. Louis Steamers. After last weekend's home games, the Comets return to the road for a three-game road trip. The Comets play two games this weekend: Friday, January 23 in San Diego at the San Diego Sports Arena and Saturday, January 24 in St. Louis at Family Arena.

The game against the San Diego Sockers is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Central (7 p.m. Pacific) on Friday. The game will be televised on Metro Sports at 9 p.m. and a tape-delayed version will appear at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27 on Metro Sports. Both weekend games can be heard on KCKN 1340 AM.

The Comets are 0-1 against the Western Division San Diego Sockers (9-10) so far this season. The Sockers won the clubs' first meeting in November by the score of 6-3. Paul Wright of the Sockers led both teams in scoring with three points. Dino Delevski and Casey Barton each recorded two points for the Comets. Last season, the Comets went 2-4 against the Sockers, which included one win in San Diego. Sockers players to watch: Paul Wright is the only Sockers player on the MISL scoring leader board. He leads San Diego with 23 points, which is 15th in the MISL. Sean Bowers leads the MISL and San Diego with 57 blocks. Goalkeeper Victor Nogueira is fourth in the League with a 4.53 goals against average.

After San Diego, the Comets visit their intrastate rival, the St. Louis Steamers (5-12), for a game at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, January 25. The Comets are 1-3 against the Steamers so far this season. Kansas City's 10-9 win came last month at Kemper Arena. The Comets lost to St. Louis 12-6 in St. Charles on Oct. 25 and also lost the season opener 7-4 at home. Steamers players to watch: Steve Butcher leads the Steamer offense with 29 points (ninth in the MISL). Goalkeeper Brett Phillips is tied for seventh in the MISL with a 5.90 goals against average.

THE WEEK THAT WAS:

The Comets finished the weekend 1-1 with a win against the Milwaukee Wave and a loss to the Cleveland Force.

Kansas City and Milwaukee played a close game on Friday night at Kemper Arena. Milwaukee led 3-1 after one quarter, 5-3 at halftime and 6-5 after three quarters. The Comets surged offensively in the fourth quarter and held Milwaukee scoreless en route to an 8-6 win. Jamar Beasley led the Comets with 3 points. The Comets are now 1-2 against Milwaukee.

Cleveland led 4-3 after one quarter, but the game was tied 6-6 at half. The difference in the game came during the third quarter when Cleveland scored three goals and Kansas City was only able to add one. The game was tied at seven different scores (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7), but Cleveland scored the game winner in the third quarter and won 9-7. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Kansas City is now 0-2 against Cleveland this season. The physical match featured 31 total penalty minutes. Miodrag Djerisilo and Jeff Davis led the Comets with four points each.

DAVIS NABS WEEKLY HONOR:

The Major Indoor Soccer League announced on Monday that defender Jeff Davis of the Kansas City Comets was named MISL Defensive Player of the Week for the seven-day period ending January 18.

The 32-year-old St. Louis native had a productive weekend for the Comets as the team beat the Milwaukee Wave and fell to the Cleveland Force. Against Milwaukee, Davis assisted on the game-tying goal that was scored by Dino Delevski at 1:24 in the fourth quarter and added an insurance goal at 5:40 in the fourth quarter to ensure Kansas City's 8-6 win. He also blocked four shots. Against Cleveland, Davis assisted on four goals and finished the night with four points. He assisted on two goals by Miodrag Djerisilo and goals by Jamar Beasley and Brian Soell.

Davis is now 14th overall in the MISL scoring race with 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists), and he is the second-highest-scoring defender. He is also tied for fourth in the League with 34 blocks. He leads the Comets in blocks and is third in scoring. Over his last seven games, Davis has recorded 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) and 14 blocks.

Davis is being honored as Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season. Comet Brian Soell was honored as Offensive Player of the Week on October 20, and Vlatko Andonovski was honored as Defensive Player of the Week on November 17.

COMETS IN THE COMMUNITY:

Kansas City Comets players have two School Is A Kick (SIAK) assemblies this week. Two Comets players will visit Southeast Elementary (Kansas City, MO) on January 20 and Gladden Elementary (Belton, MO) on January 21. SIAK gives Comets players a chance to talk to students about the importance of hard work, responsibility and respect. Each student also receives a voucher to attend an upcoming Comets home game.

COMETS BY THE NUMBERS:

Four Comets players are on the MISL scoring leader board. Dino Delevski is tied for fourth place with 33 points, Miodrag Djerisilo is tied for fifth place with 32 points, Jeff Davis is in 14th place with 24 points and Jamar Beasley is tied for 18th place with 21 points.

Chris Damico started in goal on Saturday against Cleveland for the first time since an injury during the January 2 game against Baltimore. He finished the game with 14 saves.

Kansas City's offense is now tied for first in the League with an average of 6.6 goals per game. Milwaukee and Baltimore are also averaging 6.6 goals per game. Defensively, the Comets rank ninth (8.4 goals per game).
