Published on January 20, 2004 under Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release
(Westport, Conn., January 20, 2004) â The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today that it will continue an annual tradition this year with MasterCard All-Star Community Day, which will serve as a central part of the 2004 MISL All-Star Weekend to be held February 27-29 in St. Charles, MO, home of the St. Louis Steamers. MasterCard All-Star Community Day will take place on Friday, February 27, at several venues in the greater St. Louis area.
The MISL's All-Star Community Day, which debuted during the first All-Star Weekend in Cleveland in 2002, consists of a daylong series of visits by All-Star players to children's hospitals, schools and other youth-focused community centers. This season, two groups of MISL All-Stars will each travel around by bus, with one group focused in St. Louis and the other in St. Charles County, home of MasterCard's Global Technology and Operations headquarters.
"The MISL truly looks forward to this day. Our All-Stars are world-class players, but just as importantly, they are dedicated, compassionate, positive role models, and we are thrilled that they can bring some cheer into the lives of children in the community," said MISL Commissioner Steve Ryan. "We view Community Day as a vital component of All-Star Weekend, and we are grateful for MasterCard's assistance in making it possible."
MasterCard will support the All-Star Weekend and the St. Louis community in another important way. "MasterCard is pleased to help sponsor this event for the St. Louis region," said Linda Locke, MasterCard's vice president of communications. "Not only are the MISL and the Steamers attracting soccer families here for their showcase event of the year, but Community Day demonstrates their dedication to making a difference in the region. Fans can help make a difference by participating in the MasterCard challenge: for every All-Star Weekend ticket purchase made on a MasterCard card, MasterCard will donate five percent of the transaction to St. Louis Variety Club and the Steamer Soccer Foundation."
The 2004 MISL All-Star Weekend will encompass three days of festivities designed to celebrate the past, present, and future of indoor soccer. In addition to MasterCard All-Star Community Day, the celebration will include the SPALDING All-Star Youth Skills Competition, the MISL All-Star Skills Challenge, the famous MISL Autograph Alley, and The Commissioner's Gala: A Celebration of Excellence. The All-Star Weekend will culminate on Sunday, February 29, with the League's showcase event, the 2004 All-Star Game, at 1:05 p.m. CST, followed by a Legends Game featuring a galaxy of former indoor greats in an MISL Legends versus St. Louis Steamers Legends format.
