Kansas City Comets News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - After a disappointing elimination in last year's Eastern Conference Championship, the Comets (12-3) and the Baltimore Blast (12-2) met again in a match that saw Missouri earn a nail biting 6-4 victory in front of 4,101 fans at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
With two goals, one in the final moments from its own yellow line, and one assist, midfielder Lucas Rodriguez was named Borden Man of the Match.
Both teams will meet again twice this campaign when the Comets visit Royal Farms Arena on February 19 before the regular season finale a week later. Coach Vlatko Andonovski's team will remain home as the host the Chicago Mustangs on Saturday.
Missouri and Baltimore spent most of the first quarter creating multiple scoring opportunities but both William Vanzela and Boris Pardo stood strong under their respective goals before Baltimore's Lucas Roque put the visitors on the board at the 14:17 mark. However, Rodriguez equalized with .6 seconds left in the period.
Only 1:35 into the second quarter, Blast's Adriano Dos Santos put his team on top but goals from midfielder Kiel Williams and team captain Vahid Assadpour gave the Comets their first lead of the game to end the half 3-2.
Following the fifteen-minute break, both teams returned to the field with offensive mindsets but once again, Baltimore scored first when Roque notched his second of the afternoon. Moments later, last season's MVP Leo Gibson blasted a rocket to retake the lead but Onua Obasi tied it once again with two minutes left in the third.
With ten minutes left in the match, Baltimore's Jeremy Ortiz was issued a blue card for kicking Milan Ivanovic. A minute later, Bryan Perez scored his ninth of the season to lead by one before the Blast put in a sixth attacker for the first time this year but following a deflection, Rodriguez sealed the victory to end the match 6-4.
