Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - Visalia (15-6, 15-6) upended the San Jose Giants (10-9, 10-9) 7-5 on a fun filled Friday night at Recreation Ballpark that featured both fireworks on the field courtesy of 2B Henry Castillo's bases clearing triple and DH Rudy Flores two-run home run and post-game in the sky above.
Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth against Giants starter RHP Sam Coonrod, the Rawhide scored four runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. With one out CF Colin Bray walked, followed by SS Domingo Leyba singling. DH Rudy Flores singled to load the bases and Castillo laced a pitch down the right field line and into the corner that sent everyone home to make it a 5-4 ballgame. Castillo himself scored when LF Grant Heyman reached on a throwing error charged to the new pitcher just into the game RHP Jose Morel (0-1, 4.50) and it was 5-5.
Coonrod pitched 5.1 innings and was tagged for five hits and five runs (four earned), he walked two and struck out one.
In the seventh against Morel with Leyba at first base after another error charged to the Giants pitcher, Flores connected for a no doubt two-run home run that gave Visalia a 7-5 lead. Flores is now on a seven game hitting streak and has homered in consecutive days.
Morel finished up pitching 1.2 innings and he gave up two hits, two runs (one earned), with a walk and a strikeout.
San Jose jumped out to their early lead on 1B Chris Shaw's two-run home run against Rawhide starter RHP Wei-Chieh Huang in the first inning.
Shaw struck again in the third with an RBI double following SS C.J Hinojosa's RBI double and then again Shaw knocked in a run with an RBI double in the fifth inning. The Giants first baseman went three-for-three at the plate with a home run, two doubles, four RBIs, a run and a walk in the loss.
RF Victor Reyes drove in the first run for Visalia in the third with a single after Heyman doubled to open the frame.
Huang lasted four innings and gave up four hits, four runs (earned), he walked one and struck out six. RHP Luis Ramirez (5-0, 2.53) earned the win for his one inning of relief in which he danced out of a bases loaded jam.
RHP Jimmie Sherfy (SV 5) turned the Giants away in the ninth with a perfect inning to earn his sixth save of the season.
Tomorrow night is game two of the three game series and on the mound for Visalia is RHP Lucas Irvine (0-0, 6.00) against LHP DJ Snelton (1-1, 3.60) for the Giants. First pitch is scheduled at 7:00 p.m. with gates opening up at 6:00 p.m. for an All-American Saturday.
