Reading Fightin Phils News Release

READING, Pa.---Reading Fightin Phils bats were silenced through the first six innings by Portland Sea Dogs starter Brandon Workman in the team's 5-3 loss on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Workman motored through the first six frames by tossing just 64 pitches, 45 of which were strikes. The right-handed pitcher retired the first 18 Reading hitters and was en route to a perfect game before Fightins second baseman Albert Cartwright snapped his bid with a leadoff double in the seventh inning.

Reading mounted a comeback with two outs in the seventh inning following Cartwright's hit as the speedy infielder stole third base while Jim Murphy was at the plate. Murphy then drew a walk from Workman before Eastern League batting average leader Tyler Henson ripped a double to left field to score Cartwright and cut Portland's lead to two runs.

After reliever Brandon Erbe gave up a two-run single to Tony Thomas, the Fightins continued to rally in the eighth inning when catcher Sebastian Valle singled off former major league reliever Daniel Bard. Valle advanced to third base the next at-bat when Derrick Mitchell doubled off Bard. With Anthony Hewitt batting, Valle scored after Bard threw a wild pitch in the dirt. Cartwright then plated Mitchell on a single in what would be the team's final run of the evening.

Reading starter Seth Rosin was nearly as impressive as Workman in his fifth start of the season. The Minnesota native struck out three and gave up three runs, one earned, in seven innings of work. While he picked up the losing decision, Rosin equaled a career-high with his innings count tonight. He also did not allow a walk for the third straight start.

The Fightin Phils look to rebound on Wednesday afternoon at 11:35 a.m. in a special afternoon Education Day game. Both teams have not announced their starters for the afternoon tilt. Tune into Oldies 1340 WRAW-AM or MiLB.TV for the game broadcast with Fightins play-by-play announcer Anthony Oppermann starting at 11:05 p.m.

Fightins Fillers: Cartwright broke out of an 0-for-11 drought with his pair of hits on Tuesday...Reading third baseman Henson is now hitting .407 (11-for-27) with three doubles, a triple, and three RBIs during his season-best seven-game hitting streak.

The Fightin Phils continue their 47th season affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday, May 1 when the team takes on the Portland Sea Dogs at 11:35 a.m. The first 3,000 students will receive a Education Day Team Photo thanks to Spark Orthodontics.
