Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-The Sioux Falls Canaries entered the final day of their week-long homestand in search of a much needed win against the red-hot St. Paul Saints. The Birds' battled all afternoon long, but ultimately fell on Sunday by the final score of 5-3 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Starting pitcher Shawn Blackwell (1-3, 242 ERA) put together one of his best outings of the season, but ultimately picked up the no decision, after leaving the game with the Birds' trailing 2-1 in the 7th inning. Blackwell gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out three batters in his 5th start of the year.
Third-baseman RJ Perucki gave the Birds' their first, and only lead of the day in the bottom of the 7th inning, blasting a laser shot over the left-field wall for his first homerun of the season.
The Saints came back in the top of the 8th inning, and tied the game with a leadoff homer from Willie Argo (4) and later, a two-out blast from Vinny Difazio (4) to give the Saints their third lead off the afternoon. St. Paul would add another run in the top of the 9th on a two-out RBI double from Angelo Songco to seal the deal.
Canaries second-baseman, Michael Wing put together a solid day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, and an RBI. Perucki finished his day 2-for-3 with a homerun, and two RBI.
Relief pitcher Cameron McVey suffered his first loss in a Canaries uniform, after giving up the go-ahead run on the Difazio homerun in the 8th.
The Birds' hit the road on Monday, opening up a four-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks at Newman Outdoor Field. LHP Joe Bircher (2-1, 1.66 ERA) will make his 5th start of the season for the Birds in the opening game of the series.
The Canaries return home on Friday June, 19th to open up a three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers, who currently sit in first place in the American Association's central division.
