Columbus Destroyers News Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus Destroyers Partner, General Manager and President Jim Renacci announced today that ownership and Head Coach Doug Kay have reached a mutual agreement and will not extend Kay's contract beyond the 2008 season. This past weekend, the Destroyers completed the season with a 3-13 record.

"Coach Kay helped our team become a better organization," Renacci said. "He brought a lot of character to the team and this franchise and took us to the ArenaBowl in 2007. For that, the Destroyers family will always be grateful. He will always be respected as a coach and considered a friend."

In three seasons with the Destroyers, Kay compiled a 21-31 record that included a 3-1 mark in the playoffs. In 2007, he led the franchise to a 7-9 regular season record and its first ever National Conference championship. Columbus won three-straight playoff games on the road before suffering a 55-33 loss to the San Jose SaberCats in ArenaBowl XXI-New Orleans.

On July 14, 2005, Kay was named the sixth head coach in the history of the Buffalo/Columbus franchise. In 2006, he led the team to the biggest turnaround of any AFL team that season. Taking over a squad that finished 2-14 in 2005, he guided the Destroyers to an 8-8 record and led the team to within one game of a playoff berth.

The process for reviewing candidates for the head coach position will begin immediately.
