Columbus Destroyers game notes

February 14, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Columbus Destroyers News Release

QUICK FACTS:
Columbus Destroyers (1-2) at
Kansas City Brigade (0-3)
Date: Saturday, Feb. 19, 2006
Kickoff: 2 p.m. (ET)
Site: Kemper Arena (16,200)
Officials: Tom McCabe (Referee), Paul Frerking (Umpire), Brent Durbin (Head Linesman), Bob McElwee (Line Judge), Keith Washington (Back Judge)
Radio: Columbus' flagship station WAZU-107.1 FM "The Big Wazoo" will broadcast the game live with Marty Bannister (play-by-play) and Rob Blackman (color).
Television: None.
Series Record: The Destroyers and will meet for the first time on Sunday as this is Kansas City's first season in the Arena Football League.
Series Streaks: Both teams will be looking to buck trends as of late. Kansas City has started the season off with three straight losses, while the Destroyers have lost two in a row after winning their season opening game.
Last Week: Dallas 52, at Columbus 38
Austin 37, at Kansas City 33
Coaches: Columbus, Doug Kay, first season in Columbus, fourth overall (1-2, 17-31 overall).
Kansas City, Kevin Porter, first season (0-3, 0-3 overall).

OVERVIEW: A first game against a new opponent is always entertaining as the first page of history between the teams is written in that first game.

This is not your typical first meeting between teams. The Brigade strongly reflect the 2005 New Orleans VooDoo. With the effects of Hurricane Katrina not allowing the VooDoo a place to play in 2006, the players who were under contract with the VooDoo for the 2006 season became the first members of the Kansas City Brigade. (The VooDoo are expected to return in 2007). The Destroyers have played the VooDoo twice, losing both times.

The Destroyers will be looking to improve to .500 after dropping their past two games. They will be trying to prevent the Brigade (0-3) from winning their first game in franchise history, as they have lost their first three games by an average of 8.3 points per game, including a four-point loss in their home opener this past weekend to the Austin Wranglers.

DESTROYERS Last Week:
Dallas Desperados 52
Columbus Destroyers 38
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Destroyers scored two touchdowns in 10 seconds to open the second quarter to build a 17-14 lead, however the Dallas Desperados used a 21-point third quarter to defeat Columbus 52-38 in front of 12,286 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena Saturday.

Dallas quarterback Clint Dolezel, who was named Offensive Player of the Game, threw for three third-quarter scores to give Dallas a lead that they would not relinquish. Dolezel completed 23-of-34 passes for 281 yards and six touchdowns. Columbus defensive specialist Cecil Doggette recorded eight tackles to earn Defensive Player of the Game recognition. Dallas wide receiver/defensive back Will Pettis earned Ironman of the Game honors after recording six receptions for 112 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Dallas opened the scoring with a 41-yard Dolezel touchdown pass to Pettis. After holding the Destroyers to a field goal, the Desperados led 14-3 at the end of the first quarter when Dolezel found Dialleo Burks from five yards out.

Columbus displayed some creativity in the second quarter when Ira Gooch received a handoff from John Kaleo on a reverse and bounced an incomplete pass to Thabiti Davis off the side boards in the end zone. Gouch then caught a Kaleo strike on the next play for Columbus' first touchdown and to pull within 14-10.

The following kickoff also resulted in a Destroyers touchdown when offensive/defensive lineman Ken Kocher forced a Dallas fumble that would be recovered by B.J. Barre in the end zone to give the Destroyers a 17-14 lead.

Dallas and Columbus exchanged touchdowns before Dallas converted a 39-yard field goal as the second quarter expired with Columbus and Dallas tied at 24.

With Dallas leading 45-24, the Destroyers again displayed certain panache for scoring quick points. The Destroyers responded with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Kaleo to Davis and then forced another Dallas fumble three-plays later, which was recovered on the Dallas 12-yard line.

Kaleo completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver/linebacker Eddie Galles on the next play, bringing the score to 45-38. Dallas went on to score an insurance touchdown, ending the game with a 52-38 lead.
THIS WEEK's OPPONENT:

The Kansas City Brigade are in their first season in the Arena Football League as one of two expansion teams for the 2006 season. The Utah Blaze is the other.

Of the Brigade's players, numerous consist of members from the 2005 New Orleans VooDoo. As a matter of fact, 11 players who are on the current Brigade roster were on the 2005 VooDoo Training Camp roster. Most notably is quarterback Andy Kelly. As one of the AFL's top quarterback's in 2005, Kelly was second in the League in passing yards, as he passed for 4,657 yards on 466-of-700 passing. He threw for a League best 96 touchdowns, as well.

This season, the Brigade have started the season 0-3, but have not lost by a large margin. Their biggest loss came in the season opener, a 58-44 loss at the hands of the Dallas Desperados. Their past two games, the Brigade have lost by seven and four points to Orlando and Austin, respectively. The combined record of the Brigade's first three opponents is 8-1.

LAST MEETING WITH KANSAS CITY:

Today's game marks the first meeting between the Columbus Destroyers and Kansas City Brigade. The Brigade is in their first season of play in the Arena Football League. Although it's their first season, the Brigade is loaded with Arena Football talent.

The team consists mainly of members from the 2005 New Orleans VooDoo. The VooDoo have taken the 2006 season off after the effects of Hurricane Katrina made it impossible for them to play this season and are expected to return for the 2007 season. Players who were under contract with the VooDoo for the 2006 season became the first members of the Kansas City Brigade.

The last time that the Destroyers and VooDoo hooked up came on Apr. 16, 2005. The VooDoo jumped ahead early and never let up. VooDoo quarterback Andy Kelly passed for four first half touchdowns to help New Orleans build a 37-14 lead. Current Destroyers Billy Dicken had a touchdown pass and fullback/linebacker Leroy Thompson rushed for a score.

Kelly took home Offensive Player of the Game honors, as he completed 19-of-27 passes for 229 yards and six touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. Current Destroyers wide receiver/defensive back Carl Bond was named Ironman of the Game after he caught a game high nine passes for 102 yards and three touchdowns. He also returned two kickoffs for 26 yards.

DESTROYERS NOTABLES:

DROP BACK
The Columbus Destroyers were unable to overcome a 21-point deficit in the third quarter and fell 52-38 to the Dallas Desperados in front of 12,286 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena Saturday night. The Desperados jumped out to a 14-3 lead after the first quarter, but the Destroyers fought back to take a 17-14 lead. The teams were tied at 24-24 at halftime, but the Desperados took control as they outscored the Destroyers 21-0 in the third quarter. The Destroyers pulled within a touchdown with 13:15 remaining in the game, but Andrew Layton picked off a tipped John Kaleo pass and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown to seal the game for the Desperados.

FORWARD MOTION
The Destroyers will be put to the test for the second time this season as they have a short turnaround for their Week 5 game against the Arizona Rattlers (0-3). After playing on the road at Kansas City on Sunday, the Destroyers will play the Rattlers just five days later on Friday. It is the second time the Destroyers have played on Sunday and followed with a Friday game the next week. The Destroyers and Rattlers have met six times in history, five times during the regular season, with Arizona holding a 1-5 edge (1-4 in the regular season). The teams last met on Apr. 8, 2005 with Arizona winning 70-53 at America West Arena.

HEAD COACHES
DOUG KAY: The Columbus Destroyers hired Doug Kay to take over the role of head coach on July 14, 2005. Kay is in his first season in Columbus and brings 12 years of Arena Football coaching experience. In 10 of his 12 seasons, Kay's teams have qualified for the playoffs, including two ArenaBowl championships. Kay is guiding his third team. He coached the Charlotte Rage in 1995 and the Carolina Cobras in 2000 and 2001.

KEVIN PORTER: In his first season as a head coach, Kevin Porter is continuing what he started on the defensive side of the ball, limiting opponents on the scoreboard. Porter spent the previous two seasons as the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans VooDoo where he led the League's second ranked scoring defense, which surrendered only 721 points, and also was the fourth ranked pass defense and sixth ranked run defense. Porter began coaching in Arena Football in 2000 as the head coach of the Pensacola Barracudas of the arenafootball2. He spent the 2001-03 seasons with the Macon Knights, where he guided them to the 2003 ArenaCup.
BANGED UP
Saturday's game against the Dallas Desperados did not fair well for the Destroyers in more ways than one. Not only did the Destroyers fall 52-38 to the Desperados, they also lost a couple of players. Wide receiver/defensive back Ira Gooch had an MRI on Tuesday and was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Gooch will miss the remainder of the season. He is the second Destroyers player to suffer a season ending injury as offensive/defensive lineman Hardy Mitchell suffered a torn ACL during Training Camp. Offensive specialist Henry Douglas, who was playing in his first game as a Destroyer, strained his hamstring and suffered a high ankle sprain in the first half. Douglas is questionable for this Sunday's game at Kansas City.

STILL PERFECT
Destroyers kicker Mark Lewis is perfect. At least he is Mr. Automatic when it comes to extra points. Lewis was acquired via trade with Arizona right before the start of the 2006 season and the move has more than paid off. Lewis has yet to miss an extra point this season, including the five extra points that he connected on this past Saturday. Lewis added an 18-yard field goal as well. He is tied for the Arena Football League's lead in field goal percentage. He is one of four players who remain perfect on the season. The others are Orlando kicker Jay Taylor (15-of-15), Arizona kicker Gary Kral (14-of-14) and Chicago kicker Dan Frantz (6-of-6). He is tied for ninth in scoring amongst kickers. Lewis is 4-of-8 on field goals, which is good enough for sixth best in the AFL in field goal percentage.

DOGGIN' THE COMPETITION
For the third straight game, Destroyers defensive specialist Cecil Doggette led the team in tackles. In each of the first two games, Doggette recorded five unassisted tackles to lead the team. This past weekend against the Desperados, Doggette led the team and the game in tackles. He recorded seven unassisted tackles and two assisted tackles for a total of eight tackles. Doggette added a pass breakup on the night as well and was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game. On the season, Doggette's 18.0 tackles ranks him 12th in the League. Doggette also continues to add to his career AFL best in pass breakups. The League's all-time leader in the category now has 147 to his name.

CALL HIM A BLANKET, HE'S GOT IT COVERED
Destroyers wide receiver/linebacker Eddie Galles might as well be considered a blanket. Galles is the Arena Football League leader in fumble recoveries, recording one in each of the Destroyers home games. In Week 1 against the Grand Rapids Rampage, Galles recovered a muffed kickoff in the end zone for a touchdown. This past weekend against the Dallas Desperados, Galles

TOO MANY FAMILIAR FACES
Talk about a 2005 New Orleans VooDoo reunion. This weekend's game between the Destroyers and Brigade will be just that. The Brigade have 11 players who were members of the New Orleans VooDoo a year ago. The Destroyers boast six former players from the 2005 VooDoo as well as former VooDoo special teams coach and current Destroyers offensive coordinator Ken Matous. If you bring 2004 into the equation, then you can add wide receiver/defensive back Ira Gooch to the mix. The six Destroyers players who played with New Orleans in 2005 are: quarterback Billy Dicken, fullback/linebackers Leroy Thompson and Chris Browning, offensive specialist Thabiti Davis, offensive/defensive lineman Dan Rumishek and wide receiver/defensive back Carl Bond.

BIG RETURN ON INVESTMENT
The Destroyers special teams have more than excelled this season. The team leads the League in missed field goal returns average as well as kickoff return yards and kickoff return average. As a team, the Destroyers have returned a total of 17 kicks for 409 yards for an average of 24.1 yards per return. Wide receiver/defensive back Lincoln Dupree leads the teams and is fifth in the AFL in return yards with 232 and is sixth in return average (21.1). Wide receiver/defensive back Ira Gooch, who will miss the rest of the regular season with a torn ACL, is the AFL's leader in kickoff return average. He returned three kicks for 97 yards, two of which he just missed returning for touchdowns.

A NICE RETURN TO HIS STOMPING GROUNDS
Former Ohio State defensive back B.J. Barre came to Training Camp with the Destroyers in hopes of making the active roster. Barre, who was signed to the Practice Squad after Camp, reached that goal this past weekend when he made his Arena Football League debut against the Dallas Desperados. In his first game in the League, Barre caught three passes for 47 yards and a touchdown. His average of 15.7 yards per reception ranks ninth best in the AFL. Barre also recovered a fumble forced by Destroyers offensive/defensive lineman Ken Kocher and returned it nine yards for a touchdown in the second quarter of the game. Barre is no stranger to the game of Arena Football, as he played two seasons in the arenafootball2 league.

ALMOST PERFECT
They say that perfection is unattainable. For the Destroyers, that proved true as the team allowed its first sack of the 2006 season. The Destroyers, who are a plus-1 in sacks by compared to sacks against, allowed a fourth quarter sack of quarterback John Kaleo. The team opened the first two games without allowing a sack, including limiting the League-leading Nashville Kats to zero sacks one week after the Kats recorded seven against the New York Dragons. The Destroyers had gone 175 minutes, 40 seconds without allowing a sack.

DESTROYERS ATTENDANCE STILL STRONG
The Destroyers have always been strong in attendance as the club drew 121,833 fans in 2005, which averaged out to 15,230 fans per game. In two seasons, the Destroyers have had 252,123 fans attend Destroyers games and are only one of two teams to have over 250,000 fans attend games the past two seasons. Philadelphia is the other.

The Destroyers opened the 2006 season with 12,451 fans attending the season opener, which was right at the league average of 12,672. The Destroyers ranked fifth compared to the rest of the AFL this weekend.

Team Week 1 Attendance
Colorado Crush 14,832
Philadelphia Soul 14,115
San Jose SaberCats 13,872
Georgia Force 13,265
Columbus Destroyers 14,251

DESTROYERS TACKLE HUNGER
When the Columbus Destroyers kicked off the 2005 AFL season, the team also kicked off a new community initiative in conjunction with the Mid-Ohio FoodBank to "Tackle Hunger" in Central Ohio. Continuing in 2006, fans are asked to bring non-perishable food items to each home game at Nationwide Arena for donation to the Mid-Ohio FoodBank. In turn, fans will receive one raffle ticket per donated food item for a chance to win a team-autographed, authentic AFL football. One winner will be announced during the fourth quarter of each game.
