Avengers waive QB Ryan Van Dyke

Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Avengers have waived quarterback Ryan Van Dyke, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today.

Van Dyke (6-foot-5, 230 pounds, Michigan State), who was in his second season with the Avengers, started in L.A.'s most recent game, a 66-41 loss at Grand Rapids, but played for just two series. He also quarterbacked the team for two series in the season-opening victory over Arizona. Van Dyke was 9-of-16 for 68 yards (with two interceptions) this season. Last year, he played in one game as an AFL rookie and completed both of his passes for 35 yards and a touchdown.

The Avengers (1-2) have struggled on offense this season, averaging a league-low 38 points per game.

"We haven't been productive on offense and this is the first of several moves that we will make until we find a mix that works," Hodgkiss said. "Ryan is a good quarterback and has the ability to play in this league. He just needs the reps. But with our current situation, we just don't have that luxury right now."

Quarterback Brian Mann, who started L.A.'s first two games this season and has taken the large majority of the snaps, is expected to start on Saturday (Feb. 18) when the Avengers return to STAPLES Center to take on the Chicago Rush (1-2).

Mann (6-2, 205, Dartmouth), who is in his fourth year with the Avengers, is 60-of-108 for 754 yards and 12 touchdowns (with two interceptions) this season.

Rookie Sonny Cumbie (6-4, 225, Texas Tech) is the only other quarterback on the Avenger roster. He is currently on the injured reserve list (right quad), but is eligible to come off at any time.

Saturday's Los Angeles-Chicago game, which will kick off at 7:30 p.m., will be televised on FSN West 2. The contest also can be heard on AM 570, ESPN Deportes (1330-AM) and SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

Prorated Avenger season ticket packages are on sale now at 1-888-AVENGERS or online at www.laavengers.com. Single-game tickets may be purchased at the STAPLES Center box office, at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com and by calling 213-480-3232.
