
Columbia's Smith Wins ECHL Leading Scorer Award

PRINCETON, N.J. â The ECHL announced on Tuesday that Tim Smith of the Columbia Inferno is the 2003-04 recipient of the Leading Scorer Award.
In his second professional season, Smith led the league with 62 assists and 95 points in 69 games, seven points ahead of Mississippi's Steffon Walby, who had 88 points (33g-55a) in 59 games. Florida's Brian McCullough finished third with 87 points (40g-47a) in 72 games while Mississippi's Louis Dumont was fourth with 84 points (32g-52a) in 72 games.
Smith's brother, Buddy Smith, won the award in 2002-03 when he scored 104 points with the Arkansas RiverBlades.
The first Columbia player to be named to the All-ECHL First Team, the 22-year-old Smith set a team record with 62 assists and had the second-highest point total in team history with 95 points. Selected in the ninth round (272nd overall) by Vancouver in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft and under contract to Vancouver, the 5-9 and 165-pound Smith led the ECHL in plus-minus rating with +40 and ranked third in shooting percentage with 21.7 percent. He led the Inferno with 33 goals, 17 power-play assists and 24 power-play points (7g-17a) while tying for second on the team in power-play goals with seven. Smith has also played in one game with Manitoba in the American Hockey League in 2003-04.
The ECHL will announce the 2003-04 recipient of the 2003-04 John Brophy Award, presented to the Coach of the Year on Wednesday, April 7.
