FIREFLIES TAKE-OFF BEHIND FOUR-RUN SEVENTH: Darryl Collins gave Columbia their first lead of the ball game with a two-run single to score Rubendy Jaquez and Tyler Tolbert which topped off a four-run inning that led to a 7-4 victory at SRP Park Saturday evening. Prior to Collins hit, the Fireflies (27-21) roped together a single and three walks to score a pair of runs and come within a pair. With Rubendy Jaquez at third base, Tyler Tolbert stole his 26th base of the season to get into scoring position for Collins smash. Tolbert added his first-career homer, a bullet over the center field wall in the ninth to score Matt Schmidt and give the Fireflies some insurance. Walter Pennington (W, 3-1) pitched two, one-run innings before handing the ball to Nathan Webb (S, 4) who closed out the game with a pair of scoreless innings.
STEALING THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE : The Fireflies saw Tyler Tolbert climb his way a position higher on the all-time team leaderboard. Tolbert stole a Fireflies-best three bases in Friday night's game to give him 21 on the season. That tied him for second-most in a single season for a Fireflies player with Hansel Moreno, who accomplished the feat in 2018. He's chasing Jacob Zanon, who stole 28 bags in 2017. Tolbert stole a base again Saturday to increase his total to 26 this year. Funny enough, of the nearly 200 copies of the Declaration of Independence that were made by John Dunlap, 26 remain today.
BASEBALL BURSTING MID-AIR: Last night, Tyler Tolbert hit his first-career homer. The speedster had two career homers while at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 141 games. Both came in his junior season (2019).
FOUR SCORE AND SEVEN INNINGS AGO: The Fireflies scored four runs in the seventh to take their first lead of the game last night. It marked the fourth time this season that the Fireflies won a game that they were trailing after the sixth inning. Columbia is 20-0 in games that they lead at the conclusion of the sixth inning this season. In fact, the bullpen has accumulated a 25-11 record throughout the season.
THE SPIRIT OF '76: Although the month is still young, the Fireflies have averaged six runs per game in the seventh month of the year. That's a welcomed up-tick after a slow June where the team hit just .184 in 22 games and averaged 3.68 runs per game.
HALF CENTENNIAL BALLGAME: Tonight the Fireflies will play in their 50th game of the season, their 23rd against the Augusta GreenJackets. So far this year, they have taken 12 of 22 contests vs Augusta. Tonight will mark the 114th time the two teams have played. Columbia leads the all-time series 57-56.
FIELDING CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAY: There were 442 days between the "Shot Heard Round the World" at Lexington and Concord in 1775 and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Fireflies fielders have 442 assists between the start of the 2021 season and their Fourth of July contest with the Augusta GreenJackets at SRP Park at 6:35 this evening.
