San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas --- A four-run sixth inning propelled the San Angelo Colts to a 9-6 victory against the Alexandria Aces Sunday night at Foster Field. It was also Manager Doc Edwards's 350th win with the Colts.
The four-run sixth broke a 3-3 tie, and gave San Angelo the lead for good. Second baseman Jon Dziomba, first baseman Steve Rinaudo, and designated hitter Kyle Nichols each drove in runs that inning. Nichols hit a two-RBI ground rule double that scored Dziomba and Rinaudo.
Alexandria threatened with three runs in the eighth inning. Second baseman Eddie Murray, first baseman Nick Mahin, and right fielder Austin Newell all scored. Mahin hit an RBI single that brought home Murray, and Newell had an RBI double that plated Mahin.
Newell scored from third thank to an RBI ground out by designated hitter Derrick Pyles.
The Colts responded, though, scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Nichols drove in both runs with a ground-rule double into left field that brought home Dziomba and shortstop Danny Hernandez.
Aces' starter Clay Vanderlaan (0-3) took the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. It was the longest outing of his career.
Colts' starter Alex Bates (2-2) earned the win. He gave up three runs on five hits in seven innings. Closer Alfredo Caballero tossed a perfect ninth inning to collect his sixth save of the year.
The win improves San Angelo to 12-11, while the loss drops Alexandria 11-12. This four-game series concludes Monday night at Foster Field. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m., and gates open at 5:05 p.m.
