Alexandria Aces News Release
SAN ANGELO- Kyle Nichols hit two 2-run doubles and Alex Bates threw a seven inning quality start to lead the San Angelo Colts to a 9-6 victory against the Alexandria Aces Sunday night at Foster Field.
The Colts broke a 3-3 tie with a 4-run sixth inning. After Oscar Garcia, the second leading hitter in the United League with a .413 average, led off with a double to centerfield and went to third base on an errant pickoff from Aces starter Clay Vanderlaan (0-3), he scored after Jon Dziomba met reliever Leo Madrid with a two out single to right. Steve Rinaudo then drove in Alexandria native Jordan Marks, who chased Vanderlaan earlier in the inning with a walk, to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and set up Nichols' first 2-run double of the day.
The Aces (11-12) rallied for three runs off reliever Russell Johns, who relieved Bates (2-2) after the righthander allowed three runs, five hits and no walks while fanning five and striking three batters with pitches. Eddie Murray met Zack Cadet with a walk and promptly stole second. Murray then scored on Nick Mahin's single to left, extending the first baseman's hitting streak to seven games.
Mahin would score on Austin Newell's double to the corner in right field, and after Newell advanced to third on Dan Evatt's throw home, he came home on Derrick Pyles' groundout to third to make the score 7-6.
But the Aces would get no closer. Chad Bunting chased Johns with a bunt single down to the third base side of the infield with third baseman Marks playing back, but was doubled up when reliever Jeremy Tietze got Michael Haynes to line into an unassisted double play by second baseman Dziomba.
Nichols' ground rule double off Alex Schmarzo with the bases loaded scored Danny Hernandez and Dziomba for the game's final run.
The Colts have won two of the first three games of the four game series. The Aces will give Alexandria native Trey Madeux (0-0) his second start against veteran lefthander Demetrius Banks (2-0) at 7:05 p.m.
