San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, Texas --- For the second time in a row, the Colts took an early first inning lead and went on to beat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, 7-3, Friday night at Foster Field.

Centerfielder Jason Martin, first baseman Daryl Jones, left fielder Cory Patton and catcher Salvador Paniagua all scored in the first against WhiteWings' starter Luis Noel (8-3). Noel managed to settle down and pitch seven innings, but he suffered the loss. In all, Noel gave up five runs on 12 hits.

Rio Grande Valley scored a pair of runs in the third. Shortstop Leugim Barroso led the inning off with a single and then scored on a two-out, RBI double by first baseman Welinson Baez. An RBI single by catcher Mario Mercedes brought home Baez.

The two-run inning did not faze Colts' starter Demetrius Banks (6-5). He went on to give up just one more run in his last three innings of work to pick up the win. Banks allowed three runs on nine hits in six innings. He is now 3-0 since joining San Angelo.

Ahead 5-3 in the eighth, the Colts tacked on a pair of insurance runs. Paniagua hit a two-RBI double that plated Martin and shortstop Danny Hernandez. Hernandez led the inning off with a single.

With two outs and two on in the ninth, closer Erik Draxton entered the game. After walking the first batter he faced, Draxton got designated hitter Romulo Ruiz to fly out to seal the win. It was Draxton's 22nd save of the year, tying him with Gilbert Landestoy for the most saves in a season by a Colts' pitcher.

The win improves San Angelo to 45-41, while the loss drops Rio Grande Valley to 48-37. This series continues Saturday night at Foster Field.

It will be Baseball Cap Giveaway Night, sponsored by Basic Energy. The first 1,000 fans through the front gates will get Colts' baseball cap, courtesy of Basic Energy. Gates open at 6:05 p.m., and first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
