Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Barrie, ON- The first installment for 2010 of the Barrie Colts and Mississauga St. Michael's Majors needed overtime, and the Colts emerged victorious 3-2. The loss drops the Majors to 27-8-4-1 on the season and keeps them eight points back of Barrie in the Eastern Conference.
The Majors grabbed the lead midway through the first period when Devante Smith-Pelly scored his team leading nineteenth goal of the season on the power play to make it 1-0 for Mississauga. The Majors had five power play opportunities in the period and held the lead into the intermission.
The Colts tied the game early in the second courtesy of Luke Pither. Pither grabbed the rebound off the boards and put it past Majors Goaltender Chris Carrozzi. Carrozzi had no chance on the shot.
The third period provided more heroics as the teams exchanged goals. William Wallen scored the Majors second power play goal of the night just under five minutes into the period to make it 2-1 for St. Mike's. Barrie answered back with a power player marker of it's own from Darren Archibald just over three minutes later tying the game at 2-2; that's how it would stay forcing over time.
Dalton Prout won the game for Barrie at the 2:42 mark in overtime with his shot that beat Carrozzi making the final 3-2 for the Colts. Peter Di Salvo made 32 saves and picks up the win for the Colts. Chris Carrozzi made 29 saves in a losing effort. The Colts had been busy over the past two days as the OHL's trade deadline comes on Monday at noon. The Colts acquired highly regarded defenceman Alex Pietrangelo on Friday, and also acquired former Majors tough guy Zac Rinadlo from the London Knights. Rinaldo played tonight, Pietrangelo is expected to join the team next week. The Majors finished the game scoring twice on nine power play opportunities. The penalty killing unit held the Colts top ranked power play to one goal on five chances.
The Majors will travel to Brampton tomorrow afternoon to meet the Battalion at the Bunker, game time is 2:00 p.m. The OHL trade deadline is Monday January 11 at 12:00 noon; check www.stmichaelsmajors.com for all your Majors news.
