Saginaw Spirit News Release
(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit bested the Owen Sound Attack 5-2 at The Dow Event Center Saturday night. Goalie Edward Pasquale earned the game's first star honors after turning aside 43 shots while Josh Shalla led the scoring front with a goal and two assists. Rookie Michael Kantor scored his first OHL career goal in the effort, and added an assist for a two point outing in his third game with the league. The Spirit victory marks Saginaw's second in as many games, for a record of 4-1 in the last five games. The Spirit have 46 points and a record of 21-16-3-1.
The Spirit offense started the game firing on all cylinders, scoring three consecutive goals in the first period. Rookie Michael Kantor was the first to score for Saginaw, with his first OHL career goal putting the Spirit up 1-0. Defenseman Joe Underwood and winger Josh Shalla assisted on the goal, which came at the 6:15 mark. The action barely resumed before Shalla netted a goal, at 6:26 from Kantor and winger Jordan Skellett. A Spirit power powerplay extended Saginaw's lead to 3-0, with center Vincent Trocheck scoring at the 8:28 mark following assists from winger Jordan Szwarz (NHL Phoenix Coyotes) and center Michael Sgarbossa. Owen Sound mounted a minor counter-attack late in the first period to move the score to 3-1 Saginaw. Winger Garret Wilson (NHL Florida Panthers) scored for the Attack at 15:26, with the assists coming from winger Roman Berdnikov and defenseman Jack Kuzmyk.
Saginaw's Barry Sanderson answered in the second period, firing off a shot from Sgarbossa at 3:20 in the frame to give the Spirit a three goal lead. Saginaw's momentum carried into the third period, with winger Anthony Camara scoring his second goal of the weekend at 4:23 courtesy assists from Shalla and Underwood. The Attack would score once more in the contest, a power play marker from center Marcus Carroll that was assisted by Berdnikov and defenseman Geoffrey Schemitsch, but they were unable to come back from a three goal deficit. The Spirit secured the two points with the 5-2 victory. Saginaw goaltender Edward Pasquale posted 43 saves on 45 shots. Owen Sound's Jordan Binnington posted 16 saves on 19 shots after replacing Scott Stajcer, who allowed two goals on five shots.
