San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, Texas-- In a game that would make the likes of Cy Young, Greg Maddux, and Sandy Koufax cringe, the San Angelo Colts outlasted the Coastal Bend Thunder 20-12.

Early on it looked as if the Thunder would cruise to a second straight win over the Colts. A two-run second inning single by second baseman Michael Lewis gave Coastal Bend an early 2-0 lead. After the Colts got one back in the bottom half on an RBI single by Michael Pettibone, the Thunder would put four more runs on the board in the third. Catcher Manny Mejia came through with a two-run single while leftfielder Alex Fernandez (1) followed with a two-run homer as the Thunder held a 6-1 lead after 2.5 innings.

That's when the Colts' bats began to wake up. San Angelo would pound out 29 hits en route to scoring in five of their final six at-bats. The Colts were led by designated hitter Jason Landreth, who went 4-5 with two singles, a double, and a two-run homer (2) to drive in six runs for the game. Centerfielder Ronnie Gaines went 4-5 with two singles, a double, a three-run homer (1) and four RBI to chip in as well.

Second baseman John Wagle, right fielder Adam Hale, and catcher Trey Carter each also had three hits to aid the Colt attack. Each hitter in the Colt lineup had at least two hits and scored at least one run.

Chace Vacek (1-1) was the beneficiary of the offensive attack, picking up the win by going five innings and allowing six earned runs on 10 hits. Alec Shepard (0-1) took the loss for Coastal Bend after giving up 11 runs, 10 earned, in 4.1 innings of work.

In addition to Landreth and Gaines' homeruns, the Colts also got a three-run bomb from third baseman Michael Pettibone, his first of the year.

The Colts and Thunder will wrap up their four-game series tomorrow with first pitch set for 7:05. Caleb Rodgers (1-0, 9.00 ERA) will take on Carlos Rangel (2-0, 1.13 ERA) for the Thunder. Tomorrow will also be Koozie Night at the ballpark as the first 1,000 fans will receive a Colts koozie courtesy of Family Power Sports. The broadcast of the game begins at 6:50 with the pregame show and can be heard on 1260 KKSA.
