San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, Texas --- For the second time in three days, the San Angelo Colts swept the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in a doubleheader Thursday night at Foster Field. The Colts won game one, 4-2, and then earned the sweep with a 7-2 victory in game two.

A four-run third inning in game one propelled the Colts to the win. Two of the runs were unearned due to a pair of errors by the WhiteWings. Shortstop Jordan Marks and first baseman Steve Rinaudo scored the earned runs, and second baseman and centerfielder Joseph Hicks scored the unearned runs. Hicks drove in the only run of the inning with an RBI fielder's choice.

The WhiteWings were held scoreless through six innings by Colts' starter B.J. Hyatt, but San Angelo's bullpen nearly gave up the lead. Rio Grande Valley scored two runs in the top of the seventh, before reliever Cephas Howard shut the door and secured the win.

Hyatt (2-0) allowed four hits through six shutout innings for the win, and Howard earned his sixth save of the year. WhiteWings' starter A.J. Smouse (4-6) took the loss, surrendering four runs, two earned, on four hits in six innings.

In game two the Colts scored six runs in the fifth inning to earn a comeback victory and the doubleheader sweep.

The WhiteWings scored two runs in the top of the first, but Colts' starter Alex Bates went on to pitch six scoreless innings.

Down 2-1, San Angelo took the lead in the fifth on a two-RBI double by Rinaudo. His double plated Marks and catcher Tyler Wagner. The Colts then piled on, as Rinaudo, centerfielder Joseph Hicks, right fielder Cody Hudson, and third baseman Ryan Hutson all scored.

Rinaudo, Hicks, Hudson, and Hutson each had at least one RBI that inning, as well.

WhiteWings' starter Tyler Herr failed to record an out in the fifth, and he went on to take the loss. Herr (1-2) gave up three runs on as many hits in four-plus innings.

Bates (4-6) was phenomenal after the first inning. He got the complete-game victory, allowing two runs on six hits, and striking out a game-high eight batters.

The wins improve San Angelo to 33-32, while the losses drop Rio Grande Valley to 32-35. This series concludes Friday with West Central Wireless Bobblehead Giveaway Night.
